Let the discussion begin! How are you enjoying this book so far? Thoughts on any of the characters?

Amna Kafood (amna-k) | 2 comments Its SO creepy I don't understand what is happening! I'm quite not sure if I want to know either. But I love her description of the Sinclair family its so interesting!

message 3: by Amy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amy (amytalksbooks) It's so obvious something suspicious is going on. So many theories flying around in my head right now! I love the quick snappy sentences the author has been dropping in. I've noted quite a few quotes I quite enjoyed:

"No one is an addict. No one is a failure. The Sinclairs are athletic, tall, and handsome. We are old-money Democrats. Our smiles are wide, our chins square, and our tennis serves aggressive."

"It is true I suffer migraines since my accident. It is true I do not suffer fools. I like a twist of meaning. You see? Suffer migraines. Do not suffer fools. The word means almost the same as it did in the previous sentence, but not quite. Suffer. You could say it means endure, but that's not exactly right."

THE CONVERSATION GAT AND CADENCE HAVE ABOUT GOD IS JUST AWESOME. I find it an interesting conversation to have and I love when Cadence says the truth about what others are like about God, we believe or try to when we need one or think we need one, but the rest of the time it isn't a day to day matter.

GAH I LOVE IT

Abbie Lucy (abbielucy) | 4 comments The book is already so mysterious. So many things I think have happened or are going to happen, it's so confusing but the characters are great, as is the writing style! I want moreeeeeee.

M. Rana Grable (thegrablenest) | 1 comments I started this today and I was barely able to put it down to type something about it, lol. It is so good so far! :)

Amandasshow | 2 comments It has been good so far . I love how she describes her family and her pain its nothing like I've read before . I love the story so far its so mysterious csnt wait to know the end

Isabella (lalettura-e-la-mia-libero) | 3 comments hmmm a lot of metaphor s I think .

Mara (maraanne) This is strange, but I can't say I dislike it. I am definitely curious to see what's really going on.

Bookworm | 31 comments I'm just gonna go and continue reading now. #DenytheLie :)

mac ireland (cheeseblock) | 7 comments Can we all just take a minute and appreciate how beautiful the book is without the dust cover. i mean it's so pretty XD

message 11: by Sania (new)

Sania (coolhearts100) | 3 comments this book is written in the most uniquely weird way!! nothing like i have ever read! loving it and cant wait to finish it!!

Gine Bugge Sande | 9 comments I have not a clue of what's happening in this book. I will just continue reading, because I need more!

Nicole Fernandez (dedossdepapel) | 3 comments it is so weird, i wanna keep reading

Brunna Arrais | 3 comments She was shot by her dad literally or it was just a metaphor? I didn't get it...

Nicole Fernandez (dedossdepapel) | 3 comments metaphor

message 16: by Alex (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex No, her dad didn't really shoot her, it's just how she feels. Even though I have to admit I was very confused when I first read that passage :D I mean, I think the writing is beautiful, but that was maybe just a tiny bit overdone

Maria (maregar) Woah. Woah. I was actually afraid of how this book was written because everybody was saying so many nice things about it I felt like I was going to dislike it, i don't know why, i just did. Luckily, I am LOVING the way the author writes. Her writting along with the metaphores she writes makes this book perfect - so far. I have to admit I can hardly put it down to write this.

Adrianne (rennreads) | 6 comments I like it so far. The writing style was confusing at first, but it's an interesting look into how Cady feels about the stuff that's going on around her. As of right now I don't really have a favorite character, they were all kind of vaguely described during this first part.

Daisy | 1 comments The first think that struck me with this book was the writing style. It is choppy and filled with sinister metaphors and I love it! I found myself swept away after only a few words. I've gotta' say, I'm a sucker for different writing. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Juliette (julietterosaa) | 4 comments Was finding this book so strange and hard to keep up with, then the metaphor about her father eating hearts- beautiful.

Juliette (julietterosaa) | 4 comments Was finding this book so strange and hard to keep up with, then the metaphore about her father eating hearts- beautiful.

Charlotte | 2 comments I kept hearing to go into this completely blind so I have and wow! The writing style is so unique I have never read anything like this. Its so mysterious I just want to continue to see what I can find out but I have no clue lol when she says her dad shot her I actually thought he had I was so confused

Megan (itsmeganiguess) | 1 comments This book seems like it's going to be good. I am actually really enjoying the writing style. You don't see much like it :)

emery (pagesofbooks) This book is really unique! I'm really intrigued to read on :)

message 25: by Rita (new) - rated it 2 stars

Rita (bookishr) | 4 comments Maybe it's me but I still can't really see WHY this has so much hype. I have read like 50% and I still don't like any character...

Paige Deeds (supertwitchymouse) | 2 comments I Finally bought my book at Barnes and Noble! I can't wait to start reading :D

message 27: by Nidhi (last edited Jun 01, 2014 09:04AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nidhi Mahajan (nidhimahajn) This book is so strange. The writing, the characters... I don't know what to make of the 1st part. Creepy. Can't say if I like it or not, but it is definitely interesting and gripping so far.

Emily | 2 comments It's odd, I can't tell if the book is just written in metaphors or that the narrator is just odd. I think I'm enjoying it but I'm not quite sure really.

Patrick | 1 comments Already loving the writing style. Its very vivid and atmospheric and it really reminds me of the writing style of The Virgin Sucides. The mysterious and the suspense has already started and I cant wait to see what happens next and what new information we get!

Tessa | 1 comments I love the writing style in this book...It's already so suspenseful and creepy...because we don't know why she was in the water that night! i have a feeling that something really big happened that made her want to get in the water and forget and when we find out what it is everything else will make sense...aghh need to keep reading!

Sydney Ealy | 3 comments I got it today and finished it today and if you have read the book you know how I am feeling. The Sinclairs are a interesting family I mean they own an island! I want to own an island XD

Edmund | 3 comments Lockhart's writing style is so interesting and abstract - I can't wait to see what happens next! I also like how she's built up the family to come across as being so rich and sort of powerful and it will be cool to see which are lies and which is truth.

Bailey | 9 comments I honestly can not figure out if I am enjoying this book or not. As so many of you mentioned, the writing style is unique. I am just now starting to get used to it. It feels authentic, like she is really thinking this way. There are so many metaphors. So many. Too many? I can't decide. & something shady has definitely happened with the Liars.

I don't know. I am just going to keep reading & hopefully figure out my feelings on this book. Happy reading everyone!!

Stacey Fell | 7 comments i was a bit confused by the writing to begin with.. a lot of what im gonna read that again.... and once more.... oooooh ok i see. i am starting to get used to it now. i think im enjoying it?

message 35: by Ness (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ness Benhaj (idratheread) | 2 comments Ok. There's something wrong in this book and i can't seem to find what.. It feels creepy and the author obviously gives us some clues on what's really going on but Im just not able to put the pieces together :o This book is really interesting!!

helen (readingmywaytoinsanity) (readingmywaytoinsanity) | 2 comments I'm almost half way through the book and I'm SO CONFUSED. I DONT EVEN KNOW WHATS HAPPENING HALF THE TIME.
The writing style isn't either bad or good idk. I can't have an opinion yet, because I honestly mostly don't know what's going on.
Anyway, I will read it all though, because I'm curious about the ending as most people who read it say there's a huge twist!

Stacey Fell | 7 comments im reading on my kindle but dont know ifbi can jump to the next topic yet (dont want spoilers) as kindle dose not have pages?!?! advice?!?

Kushti | 5 comments @Stacey...If you have gotten to the part where she is talking about what a mess she is in school after 'the accident' then this is the right section. Anything further than that is in another topic.

Jessisanauthor | 4 comments I'm loving this so far. The writing style is so beautiful and mysterious. I really want to know what happens! It's like the author is giving you clues that are well hidden so you won't find them until later. This book is definitely going to be very, very good.

Alex (Pucksandpaperbacks) (pucksandpaperbacks) I just got this yesterday and I truly cannot put it down. I am so curious about Cadence. I'm not sure how I feel about Gat but I dislike her dad a lot. how can you just shoot your daughter?! Johnny is hilarious. I feel bad for Cady because she is trying so hard to remember. I can't wait to keep reading!

Michael Burns (michaelburns) | 2 comments I'm absolutely loving this book so far! But I'm also a little terrified by it, and I can't really figure out why. I was so confused with the dad "shooting" Cady, and the way that E. Lockhart wrote that passage was so creepy, yet lyrical! There's definitely something suspicious going on outwith Cady's knowledge, can't wait to find out what exactly happened with "the accident"

Leslie (onelesslie) | 2 comments I am really enjoying the writing style. I am still very confused as to what is going on :/

message 43: by Ali (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ali (alilou90) | 1 comments Not gonna lie, I'm not sure how I'm feeling so far. I'm not really growing attached to any of the characters, but I do find the writing style super beautiful. Even though I thought Cady saying her dad shot her in the chest was very over the top. I had to triple read it before I realized it was a metaphor. Thank goodness I'm not a Sinclair, because I would never make it! I would be some secret child they locked in the basement and was never talked about because she just doesn't "get it" or something else equally horrific.

message 44: by Bre (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bre | 6 comments I keep getting confused with her way of describing things ("feeling the cold file underneath my cheek as my brain liquefied and seeped out my ear, bubbling.") I'm also confused as to why she gets these headaches. So many questions!

Cassandra | 3 comments I am enjoying the book a lot. I found that once I got to her talking about how she got hurt/sick I had forgotten that that was the original idea. The island is sort of this magical place that takes her and the readers away from reality. It seems like when she does get hurt/sick it's almost a relief for her to escape from that dream world.

Kassey (kclynne) | 18 comments Uhm, I don't know how to feel about this book so far. The way things are described often throw me off, like when Candance said her father shot her, I was like WHAT THE FUCK? I feel there are WAY too many metaphores for my taste.

Austin Webberly | 8 comments I like this book so far. I was a little confused when her father shot her and when her wrists started bleeding but other than that it's pretty good. Also I honestly don't like her father. I mean yeah he took her to Europe for the summer (which I would love) but I still don't like him.

message 48: by Franziska (last edited Jun 04, 2014 09:23AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Franziska (frannytastic) Her describing the pain she feels as actual dying is really freaky. Had to read the her-dad-shooting-her bit like 2 times to get it. The family is so strange though. No ones talking about his feelings. And Gat. I don't really like him. He's a bit pretentious, although he's pointing out the truth. I think he has something to do with the accident. And how can living on that island for the whole summer not be boring?

Stacey Fell | 7 comments @kush. thanks:)

sally ✿ (sallyzhang) This book is kinda creepy.
But I agree it is very unique, however it's taking me a while to get used to the writing style.

She wasn't actually shot by her dad right? It's a metaphor?

Very interesting! I can't wait to read more
