Yayati: A Classic Tale of Lust

The story of Yayati is perhaps one of the most intriguing and fascinating episodes of Mahabharata. Yayati was a great scholar and one of the noblest rulers of olden times. He followed the shastras and was devoted to the welfare of his subjects. Even the King of Gods, Indra, held him in high esteem. Married to seductively beautiful Devyani, in love with her maid Sharmishtha, and father of five sons from two women, yet Yayati unabashedly declares, 'My lust for pleasure is unsatisfied...'. His quest for the carnal continued, sparing not even his youngest son, and exchanging his old age for his son's youth...The book has won Jnanpith and Sahitya Akademi Awards.

Khandekar is my most favourite author... his books are very beautiful and full of wisdom. They change way of your thinking. But all of his books are translated I guess.

Shlokas from Mahabharata plays important role. Actually whole book is based on one shloka from Geeta.

I think it's give at the end of the book- it's regarding Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha being four Purusharthas.

I started with the Intro today morning, only to find that I need a little bit of homework before I can dive into this.
Need to get an overview on Shakuntala, just a brief on who was Yayati, Devayani and Sharmishta, Kacha....

From what I got from the intro, the writer has taken liberty with the story, It is more of a mythological fiction......

I remember loving Yayati. I have been bought up on amar chitra kadha stories and had an idea of the story. This was a story telling with a realistic adaptation of the mythological characters.

After a little wiki on these characters, started it. Enjoying it as an independent story forgetting any connection with Mahabharata....

This is a lovely story so far. I'm very well able to relate through Yayati's life.
By the way, initially thought Yayati was a girl's name :D

Yes Kacha has been around for some time now. Interesting character. They're all interesting!

Thanks! I'll check that next time when I pick this. Introduction part, I was very confused on who is who as I was trying to establish Mahabharata links. Family tree would be very helpful here.
