Stephanie (stephanie-somanybooks) | 719 comments Hi All,

It's about time to start considering our challenges for next year! Can you believe it? This year has flown by.....

For all who would like to participate next year, please start sending your suggestions for themes, genres, etc for both the year-long challenges and monthly specials. I will collect your responses and create another survey like the one we did for 2016 and we'll all vote on the ones we'd like to see for 2017. The top twelve will become the year-long challenges and the remaining options will be our list of possible monthly specials.

I look forward to seeing all your suggestions. Let's see how creative we can get!

Stephanie

I enjoy most of the usual challenges such as one word title, name, colour, animal, memoirs, etc.
other suggestions would be graphic novels, books that are part of a series (at least a trilogy), books from a different century (could be specific like 1800s or just a century other than 21st), books of short stories or poetry.

I would just like to add that these challenges have increased the breadth of my reading. Many of the books that I have chosen for the challenges are ones that I may not have read otherwise.
Keep up the good work!

Melki It would honestly be easier for me to pick the challenges I didn't like and don't want to repeat - dystopian (too depressing) and books from your birth year (too hard to find titles I haven't already read.)

And that's it.

Looking forward to voting on the survey.

How about...

books by deceased author
classics (published before a certain year)
published in current year (or previous year, if that would be easier)
has a character with disability
books that were made into movies

I definitely second the classics. I really need someone to force me to read more of those.

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) | 7 comments I have just joined this group specifically to give myself reasons to branch out in my reading in 2017! I am very excited to participate! Do I *need* to come up with suggestions for the challenges in order to participate in them?

A few ideas, though:
* Books with a total # of pages that is an odd number
* Books with a total number if pages that is an even number
* A book with the name of a country in the title
* A book where the setting is the province/state that you live in
* A book featuring a character with some sort of mental illness/physical ailment/disability
* Book featuring a character with the same occupation as yourself
* The oldest (first, if possible) book published by a favorite author (For example, if you love Stephen King, like I do, then it would be 'Carrie')

Are these the sorts of ideas that are ok?
Super excited already!

Hi Jen, welcome to the group. Thanks for all the great suggestions! You're not required to submit ideas but it helps when everyone can come up a few that we can all choose from. I'll keep gathering ideas for another week or so, then I'll send out a survey link so we can make our choices for 2017. Glad you're here to join us!

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 379 comments There are some great ideas here! I haven't come up with any myself, though I am happy to see us repeat some like the 7 continents challenge.

Cathy Correa (cathcorr) | 230 comments How about short story collections. I haven't seen this category before

I also thought about re-reading a book that has a significant impact in your childhood/young adult period

How about books written in verse form? Or epistolary form?

Absolutely! I'm definitely down for some non-fiction this year! :) Great suggestions

message 21: by Saudamini (new)

Saudamini | 2 comments How about some biographies and autobiographies as well?
Also maybe something historical (William Dalrymple) or
Regionally famous books (country wise)

I think, as previously suggested, banned books would be a great one.

Sorry for late suggestions, I just joined the group a few days ago!

message 22: by Melki (new)

Melki Not sure where to post this, we don't really have a chit-chat topic, but I wanted to thank you, Stephanie, for all your hard work again this year. You've really made the challenges fun.
