I just read Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet, Book 1. I am brand new to Black Panther, and was interested because I like the author's prose work. I found the story a bit difficult to follow, especially action scenes. Brian Stelfreeze's static work was excellent, but he seems to struggle with showing movement, especially in large groups.
Ta-Nehisi Coates is a good writer, but he still has a ways to go with comic writing. It was definitely text heavy, and while I enjoyed what he wrote, it dramatically slowed down the book at times. He has a tendency to tell instead of show, which is common in prose writers who have moved to comics. I am excited to see how he progresses, and will definitely be checking out volume 2.

I picked up two Tom Gauld books from my library this week, Mooncop and You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack. Both were laugh out loud funny, though Mooncop was much darker humor. I love his art style, and can't recommend these books enough, especially Mooncop. If you're looking for a gorgeous, unique, self-contained graphic novel, look no further.

During the week I revisited some older comics I had read before just for nostalgia's sake. Mostly what I still have of the Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things series. I've been a fan of Ted Naifeh's for a while now so it was nice revisiting his work. :)
I'd also recently finished reading Clive Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart which made me want to re-read the graphic novel of his book Clive Barker's The Thief of Always Vol. 1 #1. (The edition I own has all 3 volumes, but I couldn't find it under search to link it here.) Still a fun read in my opinion. :)

Oh ok. Will definitely have to check it out! I know I've seen it at my library, and I loved Vol. 1.

Stop what you're doing right now and go read it."
I agree! Such a good series. :)

Nice! I hope you enjoy it. :)

I read The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage, which was great. It's about a supernatural detective set in the Valiant universe, which just about makes it perfect for me. The art is more raw than I'm used to seeing in modern comics, but it works well.
I also read Hulk: Season One. I'm not a huge fan of the character. This book does a good job introducing him and the tension between Bruce Banner and the Hulk. There are a couple things that go unexplained though. The art is on the cartoonish side. The book also includes issue one of Jason Aaron's Hulk run, which is way different. I liked seeing two different perspectives on the character.
Working on Bloodshot Reborn: Deluxe Edition, Book 1. The first four issues were fantastic. I hadn't read any Bloodshot specific stuff before and I thought it did a nice job giving some perspective on what came before and highlighting the struggle the character is going through. Some Valiant knowledge may help, but it's not essential.
I'm also working on Invincible, Compendium One. Not sure how I feel about it so far. It hasn't wowed me yet, although I've only read a half dozen issues so far. There are like forty issues in it, so I expect it to take a while.
I should be wrapping up Understanding Comics this week. Took a bit of a hiatus from it. As a non-comics read, I picked up A Burglar's Guide to the City from the library. It has been pretty interesting so far.

This week I picked up:
Avengers #2
Batman #12
Faith #6
Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #1
I was really excited to find Rod Reis' droids variant of Doctor Aphra. 0-0-0 and BT-1 were my favorite characters in Darth Vader, and I'm so glad they're back!
Mike snagged the Faith #6 cat variant for me as well, so now I owe him money and a blood debt...

Wow, really? I've only heard great things about it, and I loved the first issue! The art is fantastic.

How are you liking the new Jessica Jones series?
Also, I'm very excited to read Hawkeye #1!

Hawkeye was a good read.
I forgot that I was going to be out of town when Hawkeye #1 came out and didn't preorder it! Luckily my shop had some left when I called Thursday evening (when I realized my mistake) and was able to pull it for me. I am so excited to read it! Kate Bishop is one of my favorite characters.
And pretty soon we'll have my other favorite Kate's (Kate Kane) new book too!

Occupy Avengers 2 (I was wondering if this was coming out)
Invincible Iron Man 2
Torchwood 4
Squadron Supreme 14
Sam Wilson, Captain America 16 (someone new takes up the shield)
Power Man and Iron Fist Annual 1 (Christmas story guest starring Spider-Woman and Damion Hellstrom)
Nightwing 11 (back to Bludhaven)
Harley Quinn 10 (screwy Santa tale)
Green Hornet: Reign of the Demon 1
Green Arrow 13
Aquaman 13

It was kind of a mixed bag for me.
First I read Water Baby which I think I wanted to like a lot more than I actually did. The art was nice and it had a few cool dream sequences but the overall story was just lacking for me I guess.
I was much happier reading Seconds. :)
And last night I finished reading DC Comics: Bombshells, Vol. 1: Enlisted which I absolutely loved.

I really liked Seconds too! DC Comics: Bombshells, Vol. 1: Enlisted has been sitting in my TBR pile for ages. I will have to check it out sooner rather than later.

Is it more of a humor book?

The hero team on this book sounds really interesting. Adding it to my to read pile!

I wouldn't say humor, but generally lighter in tone than a lot of today's books.

Ok good to know. I like to alternate what I'm reading between heavier and lighter fare. Next up is whatever wins the January BotM!
I also got quite a few trades for Christmas: Velvet, Volume Three: The Man Who Stole the World, Trees, Vol. 2: Two Forests, and the 3 volumes of Noto's Black Widow run (read before but didn't own).
