There are so many great authors out there and sometimes it's great to discover someone totally new. So this week we're putting aside our favorites and maybe even going a little outside our comfort zone.
For those reading in order: May 29-June 4

message 2: by MJ (new)

MJ | 947 comments For this week I am reading The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis.

I don't even remember why I picked this book! One possibility is because I love wolves, and the edition I first saw has a wolf on the cover. It took a while for me to get a copy from the library, and I'm pretty sure I meant to read this for one of last year's categories!

I do read new authors often, especially after joining this group last year!

message 3: by Valerie (last edited Jan 01, 2017 04:55PM) (new)

Valerie | 383 comments For this week I am reading: Heat Wave by Penelope Lively.

I picked this book because my best friend, who is also a reader, passed it on to me, when she finished it.

As of 2015, I began reading lots more new authors, as I got involved with the Pop Sugar Challenge then. So between my book club, reading challenges and friend recommendations, I have been reading lots of new authors and new genre.

Stalking Jack the Ripper (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #1) by Kerri Maniscalco Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked this book up because it is the group read for a read-a-thon that I am taking part in this week, and it also sounded interesting - it is set in the Victorian era and it also involves some forensic science, so I am really excited to see how that comes into play.

Do you red new authors often?
In last year I have because I have started reading more YA novels and a few adult fiction authors. I am always excited to try something new.

I already had this book on my kindle when I noticed that it was on the Goodreads Choice Awards.

Do you read new authors often?
Yep

Chelsea Chiosa | 69 comments - What are you reading this week? Fates and Furies

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author? Honestly, this book came up in my local book club, and I was trying to fit it into the challenge.

- Do you read new authors often? Yeah. I read them all the time!

message 8: by Kelley (new)

Kelley Stoneking (kstoneking) | 90 comments What are you reading this week?
I'm reading out of order, but for this category, I read The Bookseller by Cynthia Swanson.
Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I rarely choose books because of the author, unless it's a go-to favorite author, so I chose the book. Plus, this is the January 2017 selection for my IRL book club.
Do you read new authors often?
More often than not

message 9: by Lee-Ann (new)

Lee-Ann - What are you reading this week?

The Devil's Work by Mark Edwards

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?

I picked the book first, because it's a genre I enjoy reading (psychological thriller)

- Do you read new authors often?

I try to. It's so easy to read books by authors you know you enjoy, but there might be a hidden gem that's being missed!

message 10: by star_fire13 (new)

star_fire13 | 197 comments What are you reading this week?
Iron Man: The Gauntlet

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
This book was already on my radar, as were the Artemis Fowl books. Since this book is more recent (and presumably written for a slightly older audience?) I decided to go with it.

Do you read new authors often?
Not as often I should, but fairly often.

Brooke | 242 comments What are you reading this week?
The House at Riverton by Kate Morton

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked up the book based on the cover and bought it based on the synopsis. It is her debut novel, and it has been sitting on one of my bookshelves for years.

Do you read new authors often?
I try to! I love going into Barnes & Noble and browsing their "new authors" shelf, which is actually where I found this book. I've discovered so many great books and authors to follow that way.

-Do you read new authors often?
Yes, I love trying new authors.

message 13: by Anna (new)

Anna (librairieimaginaire) What are you reading this week?
The Great American Whatever

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I almost always pick books first, this one included. I don't tend to notice an author, although I've read JK Rowling, Elizabeth Wein, Marcus Sedgwick (?) John Green and Sarah Dessen books for the author before, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Do you read new authors often?
Since I pick based on book, I read new authors almost constantly.

message 14: by GailW (new)

GailW (abbygg) | 657 comments What are you reading this week?: The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper
Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?: the book. The storyline sounded lovely.
Do you read new authors often? I haven't always, but the last few years, thanks to Goodreads, I have. Last year, of the 112 books I read, 70 of them were "new to me" authors. I'm not sure how many were debut novels but I know there were quite a few.

I read Black Widow by Jenni Moen

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I chose the book for another group reading challenge--a book with a spider on the cover.
Black Widow (Black Widow #1) by Jenni Moen

Do you read new authors often?
Yes. In fact, 24 of the last 30 books I read are "new to me" authors. If the question refers to new as first time authors, that's also a yes. I read many debut novels.

message 21: by Emma (new)

Emma | 3 comments What book are you reading this week?
I am reading More of me, by Kathryn Evans

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked up the book first because lots of my friends said it was amazing and I was really interested in what was amazing about it.

Do you read new authors often?
Yes because I like to read a variety of different authors to give myself a nice range of different books and texts. I like to look at the books rather than the author to see if they look interesting.

message 22: by Rokkan (last edited Jan 29, 2017 08:29AM) (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 96 comments What are you reading this week?
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
It was kind of an impulse buy to be honest. I went into the book store looking for other books of a more Austronesian bent, couldn't find any and this was on a display table and... yeah, I figured why not.

Do you read new authors often?
I try to. There are a few books I'll buy because I like the author, but a lot of the time it's because they're cheap on Kindle that I'll give them a try.

Rebecca (rebecca_splain) | 95 comments - What are you reading this week?
I am reading The Finisher by David Baldacci

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
In this case, I found out that David Baldacci will be coming to my library in March to sign the newest book in his middle grade Vega Jane series. I've never read anything from him, and the story sounded interesting and dystopian, so I decided to check out the first book in the series.

- Do you read new authors often?
All the time, but I am a librarian.

A Virgin River Christmas

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked the book out

- Do you read new authors often?
I read new authors all the time. I'll continue in a series, or read other books by the same author if I really enjoyed them, but I go more by what a book is about than who wrote it.

I am interested in the topic - gold rush, I didn't know the author.

- Do you read new authors often?
Yes, last year, 3 quarters of my reads were from new authors. When I find a new author that I particularly like, i.e. I rated the book 4 or 5 stars, I will look for other books from the same author to add to my TBR.

I picked up the book first because I really enjoyed the movie and I've been curious to read the book. When I learned it was by Holly Black, who I've heard a lot about from YA booktube channels, I was more excited. I've never read her before and after this book I definitely plan to!

Yeah often enough. I usually choose a book because it sounds interesting, regardless of whether or not I know the author.

Do you read new authors often?
Yes, I've read from 13 new-to-me authors already this year (57% of my 2017 reading so far). Last year, 56% of my reading was from new-to-me authors, so I'm tracking pretty closely this year! :)

I had been wanting to read something by Jodi Picoult for quite some time, but hadn't gotten around to it. She was definitely going to be my author for this year, but then when I heard about this book, I really wanted to read it. I can't believe I waited to long to read something by her. she's amazing!

- Do you read new authors often?
Yes! So far this year, 13/17 books are from authors I hadn't read before. I think the challenge helps with that, since there is a lot of variety in the categories.

Hate List by Jennifer Brown
-Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
The premise of the book is right up my alley in terms of the content I like to read, so I was pulled in from that. This book has been on my radar since I was in high school and I'm so happy I'm still interested in it and I'm finally getting around to reading it.
Do you read new authors often?
I'm discovering new authors all the time. There are very few "auto-buy" authors for me so just because I've read a book of someone's before doesn't mean I'll read another one. I don't buy books for authors, I buy books for experience, and the best experiences are the ones we haven't discovered yet.
