Well, I abandoned this one. I just couldn't get into it. On to the next one.

I have a question for the moderators. I'm not completely sure what an Action genre book would be. Adventure mentions a hero, but Action books also have a hero -or am I confused? I was thinking that the Lee Child series starting Jack Reacher would be Action. But isn't Jack Reacher a hero on a mission in those books?
I think stating some examples of Action books would be helpful to me. I looked at last year's genre challenges for examples, but Action was not part of the challenge then. Any help you could give me would be appreciated!

Cheryl - Most of the people do Action and Adventure together, but there are quite a few significant technical differences:
Action = usually about a hero facing down crime or exacting some kind of justice. Facing down crime = Die Hard, exacting justice = Man on Fire.
Adventure = your hero usually is thrust out of his own world in the name of some kind of quest. Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, even Matrix.
Action = Man/Woman versus man/woman. Pendergrast Series
Adventure Man/Woman versus nature or different environment. Eg. Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Series
Action = Intense, gritty and serious. Eg. Jack Reacher Series
Adventure = Usually humorous and light-hearted (but not necessarily so) Eg. Adventures Of Hucckleberry Finn
Action = Almost always Fiction (Mostly crime novels)
Adventure = Most of the times Fantasy (Hobbit)
While determining genres, the central conflicts are considered, and not necessarily the overall theme. For example, an Adventure story will always have a part full of action, but the main genre stays Adventure and not Action. THGTTG series by Douglas Adams is a classic example. And vice versa.
Hope this helps :)

Thanks, Heena! But the Goodreads explanation contradicts what you just said. Oh boy, now what? I will just post the books I am reading and you can classify them.

I referred to a lot of definitions and I guess it's safe to say that the Goodreads definition is wrong.
Anyway, if it makes things easier, then of course you are free to interpret genres as you will. :) There are no rules.

Hehe! Thanks a lot, Dagny! :D

I was thinking that the Goodreads definition was wrong. They made it sound like any book with a hero was an Adventure. I will go by your definition, Heena. It just makes more sense.
For Adventure genre, I am reading The People of the Mist
. The author's note at the beginning refers to the story as an adventure, so I'm calling it an adventure too.

I read my first for this month: Tears of the Ancient and Other Stories - 4/5
This book was a collection of short stories. All of them can be categorized as adventurous except for the last one which was full of action. So I'm going to count this one as an Adventure read. :)

Till now is good, even though the real adventure has yet to begin. There are a lot of naval terms and many info about arguments like music and science, but it's an easy reading.
Finished this one for Adventure: The Loch
Man versus marine creature. Four stars - I loved it! My review can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It is short and it is also available on Gutenberg and LibriVox? I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the links you shared earlier Dagny!

Sounds great. I'll add it to my TBR pile. Thanks, Cheryl :)

Abandoned it at 40%. Good at the beginning, then I lost interest when the romance part began.

Dagny - Yeah,I saw your rating for the book, but I haven't read a pulp fiction yet, so I thought that this will be a nice read especially because it is short. The best part is I really like the narration. It's slow and easily understandable. ☺
Dagny,
I saw that Wanda had read The Fortieth Door (she actually listened to the audio book) and gave it 3 stars, so I'm giving it a try. Other reviewers of it called it an adventure, so it fits the challenge. So far it's good.

Finished my 2nd Adventure for this month - AB - Juju - 4/5.

My third Adventure book is The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story by Douglas Preston -
It is an AMAZING book and I don't want to be done with it ever! I am reading 2 chapters every day because it is so good that I don't feel like reading it in one go and being done with it. It is one of those books you feel like enjoying a chapter at a time.
If you like real adventure stories, do check out this book!

I'm so going to read the one you've mentioned. I had no idea that true adventure stories can be so much better than the fictional ones!

Wow! That was an incredible bio! Thanks a lot for sharing it Dagny. I just read his 4 lines bio given in this book and The Obsidian Chamber.
I guess I now have a new favorite author. I absolutely love his writing and his sense of humour.

Finished it: 3 stars. Plenty of non-stop action. It includes people with psychic ability in the plot, making the book a bit different from other thrillers. A pleasant surprise.

Yea, my library has it! "
Dagny, you could definitely read this for the January science fiction challenge. I'd call it a science fiction thriller.
