Myst | 108 comments Hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but the Dec. BotM threads aren't up yet.

Based on the poll for the YA Dec. read, the winner is Ink and Bone (The Great Library, #1) by Rachel Caine by Rachel Caine.

Use this thread to discuss, rant, gush, etc about this book.

Remember to hide your spoilers using the spoiler tag! You can find this by clicking the (some html is ok) link above the comment box.

Myst | 108 comments I can't start this book yet as I've got 5-6 new releases all coming in at the same time, but it is sitting on my night table waiting for me.

Shannon Marie I'm wondering if they are gonna get around to a December challenge...they missed the October one

Myst | 108 comments This group has gotten really quiet for some reason.

32 people voted to read Ink and Bone, yet not one comment about it.

I need to finish 3 library books and 1 other read-a-long book before I start Ink and Bone.

I'm not much for YA, but I won this book when Rachel Caine did an event, so I was looking forward to reading it and possibly reviewing it. She was such a good speaker, so genuine.

Myst | 108 comments Ok, now that I've been able to start the book...

What does everyone think of the world described where it's essentially illegal to own books?

How about that system to move the illegal books (running kids on 'routes')?

What century does the story feel like it takes place in?

At times it felt like a historical novel to me since there's (not yet in the story?) any phones, cars etc. But the 'tablet' to borrow books from the Library sounds futuristic.

How about that Ink Licker? Pays (probably an outrageous price) for books to eat.

Myst | 108 comments Oh wow, what about that revelation at the end of chapter 4...he's lucky to still be alive!

And that might help explain why that person was so abrupt about the question regarding the Obscurists and where they reside...and why they've got the job they do currently.

Myst | 108 comments Yay, done!

There are plot devices that bug me...greatly.

First off, why would the kids be taken to the war zone?!? Wouldn't trained library staff be better able to tag the books? Beyond the fact the kids are the main characters, why might they have been valuable assets for being brought along on the mission?
-Jess was obvious since his stamina for tagging books was exponentially higher than the other kids. Speaking of his stamina, why is he more able to tolerate such 'magics' compared to others?

Another thing that bothered me, there are references to the 'black archives', but are never explained. Also what about that question about what happens to the tagged books that the library already had a copy of?

What did everyone think of the relationship between Wolfe and Santi?
