Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments The 2017 Group Read bookshelf link is a place where you can see what the past present and upcoming books for discussion are:
https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...
With a close to 2016 approaching let's nominate a few book options for 2017 Group Read books now and throughout the year on this thread. Even if a nominated book isn't selected it still may motivate others to read it.
Comments are welcome to second the nominations. Depending on the number received we may or may not hold a poll for some months.
Our previous group read books are on the group bookshelves (see link)
We could probably handle one to two books per month.

Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments Here are some options that I found on various best of 2016 lists that I thought looked interesting. As far as I know, all are standalones or debuts:

Darktown - Thomas Mullen
"In the tradition of our most acclaimed suspense writers, the author of The Last Town on Earth delivers a riveting and elegant police procedural set in Atlanta, a ripped-from-the-headlines depiction of a world on the cusp of great change involving race relations, city politics, and police corruption."

IQ - Joe Ide
"A resident of one of LA's toughest neighborhoods uses his blistering intellect to solve the crimes the LAPD ignores."
"Wonderfully quirky . . . Exhilarating language and [an] oddball cast . . . A total laff-riot"―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review"

Under the Harrow - Flynn Berry
"A riveting psychological thriller and a haunting exploration of the fierce love between two sisters, the distortions of grief, and the terrifying power of the past, Under the Harrow marks the debut of an extraordinary new writer. ONE OF THE WASHINGTON POST'S 10 BEST MYSTERY BOOKS AND THRILLERS OF THE YEAR"

The One Man - Andrew Gross
"As moving as it is gripping. A winner on all fronts.”—Booklist (starred review)"
“Heart-pounding…This is Gross’s best work yet, with his heart and soul imprinted on every page.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"

Not yet available but soon to be published:

Her Every Fear - Peter Swanson
"Peter Swanson's third thriller cracks to life in the opening pages. His characters are engaging, and the reader is treated to multiple points of view... The payoff for the reader is an excellent whodunit with a magical appeal for the mystery thriller lover.'' --Seattle Book Review on Her Every Fear"

The Dry - Jane Harper
"One of the most stunning debuts I've ever read. I could feel the searing heat of the Australia setting. Every word is near perfect. The story builds like a wave seeking the purchase of earth before it crashes down and wipes out everything you might have thought about this enthralling tale. Read it!"
—David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Guilty"

Amy | 1346 comments I just reserved Under the hallow for my Kindle and her every fear from the library.

message 4: by Shomeret (last edited Dec 11, 2016 09:52AM) (new)

Shomeret | 1490 comments I have IQ by Joe Ide on my Kindle and I am interested in Darktown.

message 5: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) Darktown, The One Man and The Dry look very good.

Also recent and of interest:
Sugarland by Martha Conway Sugarland by Martha Conway

Between Black and White by Robert Bailey ( book two in a series of legal thrillers, but reviewers indicate it works fine as a standalone)

And, from 2013, Night Film by Marisha Pessl. It's 602 pages , so perhaps too long for a group read, but the description intrigued at last this reader.

Shomeret | 1490 comments Hi Carol. I'm glad to see you continuing to post in the group that is my home on GR. I know you because you're a GR friend of mine, but some people may be confusing you with our moderator, Carol/Bonadie. Can you go and introduce yourself on the introduction thread at https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... ?

I'm also interested in Sugarland by Martha Conway.

Sure, Shomeret. I'll endeavor to do that this week.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Sandi,Shomeret and new Carol
Thanks for the excellent suggestions! I will explore these later (just back from being out of town) and any others we get in the next week or so to see what we can put on a January February poll! Yippee more books!

message 9: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Great suggestions! Thank you Sandi Shomeret, Carol and Amy for suggesting such tempting sounding books! Since we are so close to January ( - how did that happen!) I will suggest a poll to measure interest for February and going ahead and adding Darktown for January with three of us interested.
Since we have enjoyed Peter Swanson's books what about Her Every Fear for March 2017 since it hasn't been released yet.

umm, yes!

message 15: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Ooh, some good suggestions here. I've already reserved Darktown, have a copy of Her Every Fear that I picked up at Bourchercon, and am off to see if Since We Fell is available yet. A psychological thriller from Lehane -- what could be better?

message 16: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments I would definitely sign up for the Lehane.

message 17: by Ann (last edited Dec 30, 2016 07:33PM) (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments The initial response is light on the 2017 Group Read poll to select a book or two around the ones already selected.
Please try to pop over and vote please to break our three way tie for the February book (poll up through 29-Dec)
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

Jan-2017 Darktown Thomas Mullen
Feb-2017 The Dry edited
Mar-2017 Her Every Fear Peter Swanson
Apr-2017 Mississippi Blood Greg Iles
May-2017 Since We Fell Dennis Lehane

message 18: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments The poll has some good options. I put the runners up on my to-request list.

message 19: by Ann (last edited Dec 31, 2016 04:34PM) (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments And I changed my vote to The Dry (now the February Group Read title) , I have a feeling I will read all of the ones in the poll eventually, they sound that good.
I also saw there will be a new Monkeewrench book mid year in 2017, another GR option!

message 20: by Christine (new)

Christine I am intrigued with the Group Read idea and the books look interesting. What is the procedure now that books have been selected?

message 21: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Christine: we would love for you to join in.
First decide which group read book you plan to read and then check out the discussion folder.
For this group we set up multiple threads under a separate Group Read folder for each book. The threads include a 'General - no spoiler' thread and the rest are labeled for segments of the book and one for final comments. Those are labeled to allow spoiler comments up to each designated segment.
Here are a couple of examples:
The current group read book Darktown
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
A past group read book The Whistler
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
You will be able to find the folder link under the active group read books or visit the group bookshelf for links to the activity on each book if we have shelved it as read.
Let us know if you have questions!

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments Should you write the summaries that start each section, detail is good. Some people may not read the book for a month or more after you, and it will reorient you to what went on in that section of book.

message 24: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Good point Barry! And we welcome comments even months later as that summary system allows us to continue discussions across various start times for different readers.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments We have a great line-up for 2017 Group Reads so far, check out the group bookshelf for our current picks. We will be looking for a June book and other summer titles so I thought I would throw out a few options for discussion.
The Long Drop by Denise Mina release date May 23. Described as a chilling standalone about a murder in Glasgow in the 1950's.
Ill Will by Dan Chaon release date March 7. Described as a creepy thriller; DNA evidence has exonerated a man imprisoned for murdering several members of his family.

Both of those look good, Ann. I would definitely read The Long Drop since I always enjoy her books plus it is a historical too.

message 31: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments These both look good, Ann.

message 32: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Thanks Sandi and Carol. In a few weeks perhaps we can have a short poll of the remaining books that have been suggested to add in June. We are on a roll with some good ones this year!

message 33: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Karin Slaughter has a stand alone releasing in August 2017 that might make a good group read book: The Good Daughter. Anybody interested?

Sherry | 4515 comments Ann wrote: "Karin Slaughter has a stand alone releasing in August 2017 that might make a good group read book: The Good Daughter. Anybody interested?"

yes. :)

message 35: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments I probably wouldn't read it on my own -- a little weary of crime survivor tales where flashbacks will probably be in play -- but would read it if others pick it as a group read.

message 36: by BarryP (new)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments I will certainly read it.

message 37: by Ann (last edited Apr 09, 2017 01:03PM) (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Excellent! I will add the standalone Karin Slaughter to the August Group Read list - it isn't released until 22-August. The Good Daughter
I added for June another book we had discussed reading together The Long Drop and I also added Under the Harrow to our bookshelves - that one got three votes in our recent poll.
Not much activity on polls around here. I recently read Under the Harrow and will put up a couple of threads to see if anyone wants to read it and comment. It was pretty good. It can be an alternative the Mississippi Blood - which I am going to start in earnest tomorrow.

message 38: by Ann (last edited Jul 06, 2017 10:28PM) (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Looking ahead, we could start posting some suggestions to discuss options for future group read books.

Here are a couple of suggestions from the new releases; is there interest in these; are there others to suggest; shall we re-engage with any previously suggested books?
The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir
(True Crime)
An intellectual and emotional thriller that is also a different kind of murder mystery, THE FACT OF A BODY is a book not only about how the story of one crime was constructed -- but about how we grapple with our own personal histories. Along the way it tackles questions about the nature of forgiveness, and if a single narrative can ever really contain something as definitive as the truth. This groundbreaking, heart-stopping work, ten years in the making, shows how the law is more personal than we would like to believe -- and the truth more complicated, and powerful, than we could ever imagine.

The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye (David Lagercrantz's newest Millenium book. What is Lisbeth Salander up to now?

Bannerless
tells the story of a murder investigation in a post-apocalyptic small town, part of a region of what was once America trying desperately to avoid another disaster by enforcing sustainable and responsible ways of life. It’s a small, focused book that offers an engrossing look at how communities might manage themselves to build a future.

STATUS:
We have group read books lined up through August with The Late Show with late July release and The Good Daughter with late August release so September, October and forward are the open months to add a group read book

message 39: by Geri (new)

Geri | 85 comments Ann - I vote for Bannerless. Post apocalyptic books are one of my favorite types of books to read. Add a murder mystery and I am definitely in! ;)

The Good Daughter is on my TBR shelf already. I enjoy Karin Slaughter books. I'll participate in the discussion for that book.

Those all look good Ann. I would lean toward The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir since it would be different to read a nonfiction book.

A book that has been getting good reviews from people I follow on Goodreads is Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi.

A few books that were mentioned before:

Sugarland - Martha Conway

IQ - Joe Ide

Ill Will - Dan Chaon

I've got both The Late Show and The Good Daughter on hold and look forward to discussing both of them.

message 41: by Geri (new)

Geri | 85 comments Sandi - I read Black Water Lilies. It is good! A mind blowing ending. I have also heard good things about Ill Will. It's on my TBR list.

message 42: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4515 comments i'm in for the late show and the good daughter, but i'm not voting. i can't keep up with all of our reads! lol

message 43: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Of those mentioned so far, the following appeal:

The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir
The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye
Black Water Lilies
Sugarland
Ill Will

It is taking forever for The Late Show to come in from the library but I will read it when it does. I have Ill Will out right now... someone here must have recommended it. I think I forgot about The Good Daughter, will see if I've requested it.

message 44: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 1490 comments I'm also interested in Black Water Lilies.

message 45: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments You can pick up Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi Black Water Lilies right now for Kindle for $2.99!

Wow! Thanks Mel.

message 47: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments If I count myself there are five of us interested in Black Water Lilies. Coupled with the availability of the relatively inexpensive and accessible $2.99 Kindle version it seems a good choice to add as a group read book. It is by an author with a previous group read book as well. (Michel Bussi with After the Crash)
Several others seem like good choices too, thanks for recommending or seconding those.

message 48: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16924 comments Three of us are interested in The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir seeming to propel us in that direction for another group read book. Shall I add that one too, perhaps for September?
I am also thinking we could add Bannerless after that; Geri and I are intrigued by it, anyone else?

Thanks for the great suggestions and for discussing our group read books. It really can add to the enjoyment. ;)

message 49: by Carol/Bonadie (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Yes on The Fact of a Body. I don't think I'll be reading Bannerless, but there may be others out there who are interested. If yes, please weigh in!

message 50: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments I would read Bannerless if it was a group read.
