Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability." She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome--and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life....

But Bill has a disability of his own: He's a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of--big surprise--murder. And when one of Sookie's coworkers is killed, she fears she's next....

You're welcome! We have quite the party here:)

Sharmon (tpgirl) | 272 comments Have fun.... I love Sookie! I haven't read her for a while I am on number 9 but I hope to get back to her 2017.

I'm so impressed with Audible right now. They have the audiobook for Dead Until Dark in Hebrew up for pre-order. It's the first time I've seen a book available in Hebrew on the site!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12912 comments Mod
That's just wonderful!

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments Started this today!

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 5477 comments Mod
I will start as soon as I'm done with Eighth Grave After Dark (Charley Davidson, #8) by Darynda Jones

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12912 comments Mod
I'll hopefully start next week.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12912 comments Mod
I'm starting this now.

I just finished this! I've been out of town since over a week ago and it took me forever. Got some thoughts here.

First of all, I like Sookie. It took me a bit to figure out her personality but eventually she grew on me. I thought it interesting that her special "ability" was considered a " disability."

Jury is still out regarding Bill. Seems like a nice guy but he's utterly clueless at the most inopportune moments. Not sure if this romance will last beyond the next book. Eric looms large and is more than a little scary.

Sam...I'm not yet a fan but was really surprised to learn he was a shape shifter! I don't like how he keeps ambushing Sookie. I need to learn more about this guy.

Someone recommended that I listen to this series and after checking out a sample of this book, I must say it made a pretty big difference.

I did NOT guess the murderer. Maybe I got caught up in the vibe of the story and all the world building and vampires but I just didn't suspect him after Sookie listened to his thoughts.

Loved the Bubba scenes!!! The Man from Memphis who didn't cross over right:)

I plan to continue but not next month.

Robin (robinmy) | 3473 comments I read this series a while ago. Bubba was my favorite character! I also loved Eric.

It looks like we have a different view of Bubba. I found him to be very disturbing with his liking for pet snacks!

There is also something off about Bill and I found some of his actions very troubling like taking it upon himself to have her great uncle killed (not that he didn't deserve it), standing by while the Monroe vampires torment her and even taking her to see Eric (although he didn't really have a choice, which is also problematic for a hero) and even allowing the very creepy Bubba to watch over her.

It's interesting because I liked Bill in the first and only season that I watched of the show. But then that could be because I love Stephen Moyer, lol!

Have you seen the season 1 of True Blood, Jonetta? It's the same killer.

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments I am with you on Bubba Lauren! I found him very strange. Wondering if we get to know about him in the next book.

Jonetta, I thought the same thing about the "disability". I also thought it was an ability but it did say that it could be tiring and sometimes she really has to try and switch it off.

I didn't guess the murderer either but I don't think I was trying as I was just enjoying the build up!

I like Sam. I felt he was there more for Sookie than Bill was. I am secretly hoping that something more happens between them.

I have planned to read the next one in March but will see how things go.

I also prefer Sam for Sookie, Tracey. The scene when he woke up human in her bed is so cute, lol!

I really wish he had acted on his feelings for her earlier instead of waiting until someone else was interested. Idiot!

Sookie is a basically optimistic person despite her difficulties with her "disability" and sees the good in her community and in people in general. I don't think that being with a vampire is a good fit for her unless she becomes a vampire herself. I hope that Harris doesn't go down that path.

I've never seen the show.

Did you get that Bubba was supposed to be Elvis Presley? That's what I meant was interesting. You are all probably too young to remember that there were frequent reports of "sightings" after his death. Bubba was supposed to have been the source of those sightings.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12912 comments Mod
There is something very off about Bill, even for a vampire. He seems to be very much stuck in a 19th century mindset.

Sam just bugged me. I'll have to see how that plays out but I haven't warmed up to him in a romance with Sookie.

Harris very much seems to be toying with Sookie and vampirism (that a word?). Hope she doesn't go down that path either.

Tracey, I was so absorbed by the story as a whole that I didn't focus on the whodunit either!

I don't know why I thought you had. You didn't miss anything. I've never understood why it is so popular.

Yes, I understood that Bubba was Elvis and I liked how Bubba explained the sightings but not the way he is portrayed as a mentally disabled vampire who likes to snack on people's pets. Oy!

The show never appealed to me, at least what others were sharing about it, so I never tuned in.

Good decision. There are some scenes from the first season I wouldn't mind erasing from my psyche.

I hope Sookie doesn't become a vampire either...

Ah oops! That went over my head....

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments Jonetta wrote: "The show never appealed to me, at least what others were sharing about it, so I never tuned in."

I don't think I will ever watch it either.

Melissa (melissasd) | 1610 comments I have watched the first couple of season of True Blood, but got tired of it. It started to drift off it weird directions. I'm hoping the books don't do the same thing. Since I have seen the series, I knew who the murderer was. No surprises for me. I like Sam from the series, but he seems different in the books right now. Eric is my favorite, book and series. I did miss the Bubba/Elvis reference.

Who in the world liked the TV show???

Guess I'm going to have to get to know Eric:)

Melissa (melissasd) | 1610 comments The first few seasons were pretty good. I just got sick of Bill. He changed and I didn't like him anymore. There were also some story lines that I could have done without. Eric is played by Alexander Skarsgård and he is just fine!

Robin (robinmy) | 3473 comments Jonetta wrote: "Who in the world liked the TV show???

I tried watching the show but really didn't care for it. I made it through half of the first season and I just dropped it.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12912 comments Mod
Obviously, none of us:)

Melissa wrote: "It started to drift off it weird directions. I'm hoping the books don't do the same thing..."

From what I've read, the first couple of seasons of the show stick to the books quite closely but then the show diverged and is very different from the books.

Lieke | 1722 comments My sister liked the show, or maybe she just liked (one of) the actors.... I'm not sure :)
I have never seen an episode. In the books I hope there will be more about Sam, I like him better then Bill.

Melissa (melissasd) | 1610 comments I started book 2 last night and there has already been an incident that is way off from the show. Not sure why they changed this part. Anyway, I was thinking about Bill and what I felt was off about him. He doesn't seem to have much of a personality. He's almost boring and monotone.

Tracey (trakka) | 1363 comments Melissa wrote: "He's almost boring and monotone. "

That sums him up nicely!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 12912 comments Mod
Yeah, I think so, too.
