Taylor (seffietay) It's a bit early and we are all still hopefully enjoying Bastard out of Carolina, but let's start thinking about the JULY/AUGUST selection!! What do you want to read??

Erin (rinvas) | 46 comments I'd like to read Astonished: A Story of Evil, Blessings, Grace, and Solace. The author, Beverly Donofrio, also wrote Riding in Cars with Boys: Confessions of a Bad Girl Who Makes Good (which I would also love to read). I think it will be a tough read, but I've heard it is good. My friend recently interviewed Donofrio about the book when she came to my town and I've wanted to read it ever since.

Taylor (seffietay) Thanks for the nomination!

Maya Angelou died today and I have very shamefully never read any of her poetry. I would like to nominate I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings for the group to read! RIP Maya.

I think that's a great idea. I've been meaning to read that too.

So, I have a proposal for the distant future (like maybe 2015). Currently we're reading one main selection (frequently contemporary), one monthly memoir, and one monthly classic novel. I would like to propose, perhaps once we're done with the classic novels, or perhaps as a replacement for the monthly memoir, that we pick one important female author and read her entire body of work, one month at a time. The list of possibilities is almost endless. Off the top of my head I'm thinking Margaret Atwood, Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Dorothy Dunnett, Dorothy L. Sayers, Laurie R. King, Marge Piercy, etc., etc., etc. I just think it would be fun to concentrate on just one author and take a comprehensive look at her - if others think that's fun!

Taylor (seffietay) OMG a year of Atwood, can you imagine! I think this is a great idea. We should definitely think about what format we want the group reads to take for 2015. When the group first started it was one monthly selection, then that was too fast for some people so it became one book every 2 months, then it became a pair of books every two months. Then I added the monthly memoir, THEN we added the classic selection and cut the 2 main selections back to 1. I'd like the reading load to continue to be ambitious because there are so many amazing female authors that one a month (only 12 a year!) is just not enough. I'm of the opinion that 2 a month wouldn't be enough either hahaha. But I'm a bit of a nut.

Maybe I'll open a thread for feedback on the format?

I think you're right, a discussion on the format might be a good place to start.

Is it time to start thinking about nominations again?
