Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments What are you reading for this category? Did you know of this book already or was it a complete discovery?
I'm reading Rising Strong by Brené Brown. A friend loaned it to me months ago, and it has been sitting on my side table ever since. I just sat down, saw it and as I'm trying to have at least one non-fiction book on the go all of the time, I figured now was as good a time as any! I had never heard of this book, and I didn't ask to borrow it, but my friend loved it and as I've been going through some rough stuff, figured it could help me out.

Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from?
My friend.

Do you often browse what people read to discover new books?

message 15: by Megan (new)

Megan (megan_morris) - What are you reading for this category? Did you know of this book already or was it a complete discovery?
I read Bitten by Kelley Armstrong Oddly enough I had read the second book years ago not knowing it was a sequel so technically I suppose I figured it out but never went back and read it.
- Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from?
My bookworm friend Kara had been raving about this series so when I realised I had actually read the sequel I jumped on it. I always ask her what she's reading.

- Do you often browse what people read to discover new books?
I don't 'browse' what people read on say Goodreads or anything but I ask everyone I know almost as soon as I meet them 'do you like to read?' if yes then I constantly ask them what they're reading or if they've read anything good recently.

message 19: by Pam (last edited Jul 03, 2017 09:37AM) (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments - What are you reading for this category?
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

Did you know of this book already or was it a complete discovery?
Yes, I knew of this book and had recently purchased a copy. It's also the March book selection for one of the GR groups that I participate in.

- Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from?
12 of my GR friends, including Bill, have read it, most giving it 5 stars. I tend to have similar reading interests as Bill and I trust his recommendations!

- Do you often browse what people read to discover new books?
I don't browse their bookshelves but I see what they are reading via the GR updates, challenge posts and discussion threads. That's where I get almost all of my TBR additions!

EDIT (7/3): I couldn't get into Poisonwood Bible so I changed my book to TransAtlantic by Colum McCann, after finding it at the Dollar store. Two of my GR friends, who have similar tastes as mine, gave it a good rating so I decided to give it a try! I am not familiar with this book but have heard of the author.

- Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from?
Staying overnight with family after helping them clear out and pack books up before an open for inspection to sell their house. We re-arranged all the books in their wall of floor-to-ceiling shelves by colour - this had a bright coloured tangerine spine which stuck out and was just the thing to wind down with.

message 23: by MissLemon (new)

MissLemon | 591 comments I read The Revenant by Michael Punke The Revenant
I knew of the book because of the Oscar winning film, but decided neither were for me based on the film trailer.
My brother in law had read the book before seeing the film and ( whilst agreeing I probably wouldn't like the film) thought I would enjoy the book. He was right!
I often get inspiration from what others read, it's why I joined Goodreads!

message 24: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments What are you reading for this category? Did you know of this book already or was it a complete discovery?

Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from?

Do you often browse what people read to discover new books?
All the time, can't help myself. I browse both at physical bookshelves and electronical ones. We have a website in Norway similar to GR called "bokelskere.no" where I get lots of inspiration. Also, the physical bookselves in a home could tell quite a lot about a person.

message 28: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments - What are you reading for this category? Did you know of this book already or was it a complete discovery?
I'm reading A Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes book. I never really planned reading the whole Sherlock collection, but Audible just launched almost the entire collection narrated by Stephen Fry (who is an amazing narrator) for only 1 Audible credit! So I jumped into it.

- Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from?
I became aware of this Audible collection by Jean Bookishthoughts, a BookTuber I really like.

- Do you often browse what people read to discover new books?
Yes I love having a look a people's physical bookshelf and I follow a few BookTubers. On Goodreads I mainly discover what people are reading through this group and my friends' publications.

My boyfriend, who I'm visiting in Hawaii, gave it to me to read while I am here.
Do you often browse what people read to discover new books?
I like to look at other people's bookshelves to get a sense of their readings style, but because I'm confident in the style that I read, I don't use other people's bookshelves as a place for recommendations or inspiration.

- Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from? The owner of our company wants everyone to read it. He kept sending us picture texts of what it says and how he wants to implement more strategies from this book. We are doing a lot of it already but he wants us to stay on course. He thought it was one of the best business books that he has read. Our boss promotes reading throughout the company. If you read a business or self help book you get $100. You get up to 12 of those a year.
- Do you often browse what people read to discover new books? I look on Goodreads what people are reading and I also look on people's personal bookshelves.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

Did you know of this book already or was it a complete discovery?

Oh, I definitely knew about this one. It's quite popular with fans of Pratchett and fans of Gaiman. It could be the best known work of each.

- Whose bookshelves did you get inspiration from?

This book immediately came to mind when the topic won its poll back in 2016. My friend Jessica had it on her literal book shelf and had been trying to convince me to read it, since I am a fan of Pratchett and she a fan of Gaiman.

But then, I thought it might work for another topic, so I did a bit of sleuthing on my friend's Goodreads bookshelves and you know what I found? Good Omens. Everyone loves Good Omens.

- Do you often browse what people read to discover new books?

Yes. If I find that I have books in common with another reader, then I like to see what they have as their favorite books and least favorite books. This information can cause me to read or avoid other books.
