Use this space to discuss books you're reading or that might fit the fifteenth Read Harder task.

message 3: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (ipomoea) | 10 comments George was wonderful-- sweet and age-appropriate and from a trans author.

message 4: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizbecker) | 17 comments On of my favorite books from this past year was Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I recommend the audio book, read by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

message 5: by Meg (new)

Meg (megschiebel) | 2 comments Love Aristotle and Dante! Also, Adam Silvera's More Happy Than Not was great and he has another book coming out in 2017!

message 6: by SibylM (new)

SibylM (sibyldiane) | 62 comments I think I'm going to read Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley. In my experience the gay male experience is much more frequently represented than the gay female experience in YA and children's lit so I will be planning to read a book by a female author about female characters.

message 7: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 212 comments I love Victoria Schwab's adult fiction, so it'll be fun to check out some of her YA stuff.

message 8: by Kate (new)

Kate | 4 comments Is the purpose to read a YA book about the LGBTQ+ experience, or by a book by an LGBTQ+ author for YA that could be about anything?

message 9: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 212 comments Kate wrote: "Is the purpose to read a YA book about the LGBTQ+ experience, or by a book by an LGBTQ+ author for YA that could be about anything?"

If the purpose was to read a book specifically about the LGBTQ+ experience, they should have said so in the task. So I figure the purpose is to promote visibility of LGBTQ+ authors.

message 10: by Renee (new)

Renee (reneeww) | 122 comments The way I read it is the author is LGBTQ+ so the topic could be anything

message 11: by Bonnie G. (new)

Bonnie G. (narshkite) | 1413 comments I think The Miseducation of Cameron Post will be my read -- it is also a banned book for those who double up.

message 12: by Amy (new)

Amy | 18 comments Map of Ireland by Stephanie Grant sounds great. Is Ms. Grant LGBTQ+?

message 13: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cmbohn) | 26 comments I am reading The God Box by Alex Sanchez. He has a lot of teen books, but I haven't read any of them.

message 14: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (nemetona) | 25 comments Patrick Ness 'The Rest of us just lives here'.

message 15: by Leanne (new)

Leanne | 5 comments There are so many newer YA books with LGBTQ+ themes/characters but it seems that few of the authors identify as LGBTQ+.

Anything on the Goodreads Best of 2016 list?

message 16: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 129 comments I'm going to use this prompt as my reason to finally read Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson.

message 17: by SibylM (new)

SibylM (sibyldiane) | 62 comments Amy wrote: "Map of Ireland by Stephanie Grant sounds great. Is Ms. Grant LGBTQ+?"
Yes she is! And that looks like a great read, thanks for the tip.

message 18: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (brilliantglow) | 6 comments Here's a list of LGBT authors if anyone needs a starting point.

If I Was Your Girl was one of the nominations for the Young Adult Fiction category this year and the author is a trans woman

message 20: by Becki (new)

Becki Mussa | 3 comments Any of Jennifer McMahon's books. I've read 3 of her books and I loved them!

message 21: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (lindseyclare) | 34 comments If anyone is looking for an Australian option, Will Kostakis' books are great!

message 22: by Katie (new)

Katie | 10 comments I'm going to read Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel for this task.

message 23: by SibylM (new)

SibylM (sibyldiane) | 62 comments Carrie wrote: "I'm going to read Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart for this task. One of my coworkers recommended it."
Is Donna Gephart LGBTQ? For some reason I thought she was a straight (CIS) woman but I'm not sure how or why I was thinking that!

message 24: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 212 comments Sorry for the short notice, but This Savage Song is available today (12/26) for $1.99 on kindle.

message 25: by Darlene (new)

Darlene | 16 comments I recommend this one for this category:
Scars by Cheryl Rainfield

message 26: by Elle (last edited Dec 28, 2016 07:06PM) (new)

Elle (elleay) | 68 comments Going with Seanan McGuire's Down Among the Sticks and Bones for this task. It's the second book in her Wayward Children series. I read the first, Every Heart a Doorway, earlier this year. It receved a Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Fantasy (2016). This second book will not be released until June so I'll have to wait a bit.

Is Seanan McGuire LGBTQ+? I loved Every Heart a Doorway and am very excited for the next book in this series.

Did a little research and found out she is bisexual.

message 29: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabethlk) | 365 comments I haven't decided for sure, but I am leaning towards George for this task. It has been on my list for awhile, and this seems like a good opportunity to get on that.

message 30: by Neighbors (new)

Neighbors (neighbors73) | 4 comments I absolutely *loved* the book NOT YOUR SIDEKICK by C. B. Lee. It's just adorable: about the daughter of the town's superheroes falling in love with the daughter of the town's supervillains. It would also work for #20 (LGBTQ+ romance).

message 31: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1 comments I'm going to read T Cooper's Changers Book 1. I enjoyed his memoir for adults and have been curious about this YA series.

message 32: by Rokkan (new)

Rokkan (rokk) | 35 comments I'm reading Openly Straight for this one. The author came out as gay via a newspaper article he wrote about sport, and it's been on my TBR for a while too.

message 33: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 4 comments Going to read Drag Queen by Jeffery Self for this one. Happened to meet him by chance last year at Chicago's BookCon and got his book, so perfect time to read it.

message 34: by Bonnie G. (new)

Bonnie G. (narshkite) | 1413 comments Liz wrote: "On of my favorite books from this past year was Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I recommend the audio book, read by Lin-Manuel Miranda."

Just finished my first challenge with Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and it was excellent. I did the audio and Lin Manuel Miranda was just so good.

Melissa | 44 comments Jessica wrote: "George was wonderful-- sweet and age-appropriate and from a trans author."
This is a fabulous book! Maybe I'll choose it as my re-read.

message 36: by Annette (new)

Annette Smith | 1 comments It Looks Like This was a heartbreaking story that makes you deeply invested in the characters. I really enjoyed it. It is a YA LGBTQ+ book written by an author that also identifies as such.

message 37: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (rachelmanwill) We've got a post up today to help with this task: http://bookriot.com/2017/01/03/read-h...

message 38: by Khaliah (new)

Khaliah Williams | 1 comments I would also include Fans of the Impossible Life by Kate Scelsa. Author identifies as LGBTQ+, as do many of the main characters. Also features a young woman of color as a narrator. It's really a beautiful book.

message 39: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst sounds like it might work for this one. It's about a princess who falls in love with another princess.

message 40: by Erin (new)

Erin Burba | 4 comments Theresa wrote: "I'm going to use this prompt as my reason to finally read Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson."

Same- so excited!

Jess (oracle_of_madness) (oracle_of_madness) | 9 comments i am reading Aristotle and Dante discover the universe while listening along with lin-manuel miranda's audio... i absolutely reccomend it

Yes, she's cis and I believe she's straight. She wrote the book with lots of research on trans youth (Lily) and inspired by her son's struggles with being bipolar (Dunkin).

But it's still a fantastic book and could be read for #20 an LGBTQ romance novel.

message 43: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 10 comments I highly recommend We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson. It is sooooo good!

message 44: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 44 comments Lisa wrote: "I highly recommend We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson. It is sooooo good!" I think this is the one I am going to try. Thanks for the recommendation!!

message 45: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 44 comments I might also try The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth. Has anyone read that?

message 46: by Fran (new)

Fran | 7 comments Holly wrote: "I'm reading Openly Straight for this one. The author came out as gay via a newspaper article he wrote about sport, and it's been on my TBR for a while too."

I enjoyed this one Holly, and he's got a sequel to it coming out in March :)

message 47: by Fran (last edited Jan 03, 2017 04:32PM) (new)

Fran | 7 comments I might go with either Gena/Finn or Teeth

Some of my favorites that fit this category if anyone is looking for a recommendation-
Two Boys Kissing
Boy Meets Boy
You Know Me Well
Marco Impossible
Gone, Gone, Gone
Openly Straight
