Will Nelson | 10 comments I read this sometime before 2010 - there was a boy going through puberty and he found out he was a vampire and had to hide it. Changelings and monsters were acknowledged by the general public but really hated, which was why he had to hide. There might have been a girl who helped him understand the vampire culture, but I'm not sure.
There's a scene where his mother talks about a woman who killed her child and one who had been replaced by a changeling, and she only felt bad about the human because the other one "wasn't really her son anymore"
His father teaches him to shave but then he cuts himself and just keeps licking the blood.
At the end he needs to decide whether he's going to kill his best friend's dog or not.

Zombieslayer⚡Alienhunter (theslayingisthunter) | 153 comments Longshot, but Eighth Grade Bites? Vampire boy in question is thirteen/fourteen.
I haven't read it myself though so I don't know if anything else is right.
Only pubescent vampire title I could come up with.

Will Nelson | 10 comments I saw that book when I was searching on my own, but I don't think it's the one. The dad definitely didn't know the kid was a vampire. Thanks though!

A long shot - Diary of a Wimpy Vampire by Tim Collins?

Elizabeth, what's the tone - serious, angsty, funny, etc.?

Will Nelson | 10 comments That one was published too late, and definitely doesn't fit the tone. It was much more angsty and dark, with lots of musing about morality and what the boy will have to do to survive if people turn on him.

Summer | 276 comments This sounds a lot like Thirsty by M T Anderson.

Will Nelson | 10 comments YES! I think that might be it! Looking at reviews, one reader included a quote that I remember very vividly. Thank you so much!!
