Oh good! I'm trying to emprove (and especially not to forget) my English... and I'd like to start again with French, I studied it when I was 12-14... I can read it and I understand a little, but to speak and most of all to write French is really difficult... I get mad with accents!

I enjoyed it, but... I don't know, there's something strange in this book.

I think that it's good because of Schmitt's style, that makes everything special and magical, but the simplicity of this story doesn't convince me at all; I think simplicity can become easily superficiality.

message 16: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 3953 comments I agree. I liked the other Schmitt books better than this one. I didn't connect with any of the characters in Mme Ming.

message 17: by Rowizyx (new)

Rowizyx | 423 comments The story is nice, but... There are big themes on the table, too serious themes to be talked about so quickly, to me. Probably I feel this way because two years ago I read Xinran's Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother: Stories of Loss and Love.

I'm still reflecting on this book, because I'm not a believer (although I've been educated as Catholic) and I'm quite negative about missionaries' work. We follow two Portoguese missionaries in XVII century who reach Japan to discover what happened to their spiritual father and teacher, Father Ferreira, who could have forsworn his faith, according to some gossips. As soon as they arrive to Japan, they can discover how hard and cruel persecutions of the Christians are. The narrator, Father Rodrigues, can see with his own eyes tortures and executions, and he himself is catched and obliged to forswear treading on a Christian image, a "fumie". The novel is very cruel and rough, still it's really interesting.

We have the perception of how missionaries were unprepared, to me. During their journey, Rodrigues and his fellow, Garrpe, are happy thinking they could have the chance of a "glorious martyrdom", as they were taught, but it's a bit different when you can see or you suffer torture on your own skin, or your foe is cruel and decides to torture someone to make you forswear. And even there, probably we can say Rodrigues betrays his faith more accepting to forswear to save a few peasants from torture and physical pain than forswearing in itself. We can read his doubt growing as long as God does not answer to him nor saves the poor suffering people from torture in this world (but even Christ suffered in this world, crying on the cross "my God why did you abandon me?"... Christian salvation is not in this world, and this belief is basic in Christianism...). And it's fascinating to see a Jesuit be so uncomfortable with torture... how do you think Holy Inquisition worked, dear Rodrigues? So, violence and torture are agreable only if is "a infidel" to suffer them?

However, the book is really well-written, and made me think a lot. It's not a book for relax, of course.

I hope my thoughts are understandable in English :D

It does sound very intriguing. Definitely not an easy and relaxing read, for sure. Thanks so much for a great description. I look forward to reading it.

Rowizyx | 423 comments I'm asking to myself why I'm so angry with the main character although he's victim of persecution... instead of critizing the Japanese authorities who persecuted Christians. Would I react in a different way, if I was a believer?
