Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Possibly a bit early, but I am going to stick to pretty much the same categories again - reducing the number of books, as I've failed this year.

23/09 - edited as I was nearly finished, I've increased my number of books to 45

52/45 * (going off the GR tracker, which is always out due to finishing a 2016 book in 17)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Wow! That's all I can say! I feel good if I get through one a month.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments When I first started, my target was 100! It's been going steadily down since

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Well, despite being slow at reading again this year, the two I have read have hit a few targets. I may hopefully have more reading time this year.

message 14: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Keep at it Desley!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished another book, which starts another of my targets. I can only give it 3*, while I learned more about CS Lewis, it was too short, and things glossed over, which I felt a shame. C.S. Lewis: A Life Inspired I'm on target, and should be able to finish another book tonight - plus I have a hairdresser appointment on Sat, they are always good for getting some reading time in.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Another book finished, can't remember the last time I read two books in a week!! Both books I've just started are both doorstops though, so will take a bit longer.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Another book finished, despite it being a doorstop - to be fair, the margins were so wide, and the text a little large that there wasn't that much on each page. So rare to read 3 books in a month though - fingers crossed I can finish the second doorstop. The paperback I picked up last night is only 277 pages, and starts on page 7, so a good chance of finishing that too.

message 18: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Well done Desley. What was the one you've just finished?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished 2 this week, The Secret Garden, a reread of a children's classic, so an enjoyable read and what seemed to be the shortest book ever, so only a 2* read unfortunately Last Statements and Case Files of Executed Death Row Inmates - Lubbock County- Texas

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Another one finished, and another doorstep - didn't think I'd get it finished this soon, but thanks to travelling and appointments, I managed it. Seems I need to start focusing on some new authors though.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Discovered last night that the kindle app on my tablet does have every book that I can view in purchase order date, so will go back to my early books and read any that haven't been read - suspect this will mean a lot of DNF and low rating books. Will keep a track of the pages, and add any part read ones to the page count at the end of the year.

message 23: by Joo (last edited Mar 28, 2017 02:02PM) (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I mark my DNFs with a zero score. That means the author is not penalised for my bad choice. Obviously if the book is really bad, they deserve a 1 star.

I'm referring more to DNSs rather than DNFs :)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Thats a good idea - means I remember I've tried it so I don't try again!

message 25: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I also have a gave-up "tag", so it's marked as read and gave-up. I have to remember that the 1311 books that I've apparently read also include the 294 in the gave-up group.

With some old books that there's no way I'd accidentally re-buy, I'm getting rid of them from all my lists and pretending I've never heard of them.

Think I'll definitely use that

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Another book finished - just a book of short stories to get me through till the end of the month - mixed bag, which I think is always the case with short story collections.

message 28: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Yes sometimes I really like one story but not the rest so the book has to go in the interests of decluttering.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished another book, one I have waited 2 years to come down in price to read, and it was worth the wait - couldn't quite give it 5 stars, as it did drag in places. Sycamore Row

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Another 2 finished this weekend, enjoyed both - seem to be doing well on most of my categories, but need to read some new authors - I don't class my non-fiction and classics as new authors.

message 31: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments That's good Desley. Difficult to recommend as I'm aware my tastes are either history books or Science fiction/fantasy/crime and I'm not sure if your interests are in any of those.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments I do like crime - I have lots of books by authors I haven't read, I just keep navigating to my favourite ones!

message 33: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments I'm reading through a few crime series: the Bryant and May one by Christopher Fowler and the Flavia de Luc one by Alan Bradley. I've read odd ones by other authors - enjoyed a couple of Agatha Christies, but wasn't so keen on some of the others. Currently reading one of the Wycliffe novels by W J Burley as I enjoyed the repeats of the old TV series that they reshowed last year.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments I've just chosen a history book with a bit of crime as my bathroom book - it's about the Borgias (sp?)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments And another one finished! 3 books ahead again, lets hope I can keep it up.

message 36: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Well done Desley!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments 2 finished since my last update. Both doorstops, so have nearly hit that challenge incredibly early in the year (didn't hit that one at all last year). Also really enjoying my Borgia books, which really surprises me, I'd put it off last year.

message 38: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments That's good Desley on both counts.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Thanks, I'm 2 books ahead but not getting much reading time

message 40: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Doing better than me anyway - 13 behind!!!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Pam wrote: "Doing better than me anyway - 13 behind!!!"

But I've only read 19!

message 42: by Desley (Cat fosterer) (last edited Jun 18, 2017 11:44AM) (new)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished all three of my books this weekend, some very good reads, and just noticed I've hit one of my targets, not only are we only half way through the year, but it's one I didn't manage to hit last year, my doorstop challenge. And I'm ahead with my numbers

Sacrifice - 4*. Didn't realise it was a debut book until I'd read it, it was so gripping the only thing that stopped me reading it quicker was lack of time - towards the end, I even carried on reading rather than eating!! Would definitely recommend, and will read more of hers.

Chinese Whispers - 4*. I'd bought this a few years ago when they kept doing 20p books, I've not read the other 5 in the series, so nearly gave up on it, so glad I didn't. Ironically, I didn't read the back of it before starting it, so was really happy when I realised it was someone basing his killings on Jack the Ripper.

Poison in the Blood: The Memoirs of Lucrezia Borgia - 3* - this was another book I'd got for free a while ago, and for some reason kept putting off, but really enjoyed it. There are reviews saying it isn't very historically correct, but I don't know much about the Borgias, so I didn't notice that. Could do with a bit of a proof read though.

message 43: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Glad you enjoyed them Desley, and excellent progress.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Thanks Pam

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Finished another book, not really my thing, a lot of religious comments, and proofing issues, with spaces missing etc. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have continued it, but didn't have much concentration with Lucy being poorly, so stuck with it. Wouldn't bother with the rest of the series though.

message 46: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments What was that one Desley, or don't you like to say?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Here you are Pam Paid In Blood

message 48: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Looks like a tie-in to the NCIS series, is that right? I never got into that - watched all of CSI plus the New York and cyber spin-offs, and Silent Witness, but there's only so much you can watch, especially of the same sort of thing.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments No, I thought that but a misnomer. I pretty much just watch that kind of stuff

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Started a Mel Comley novella on Fri, and finished it today Blind Justice - lovely to catch up with old characters, and impressed she wrote such a well written story in such few words.

Then read Medical Mystery - The Yale Experiments today - it was an interesting medical thriller, an original concept, but lost points for formatting/grammatical errors. Would look out for others though.

Then started By Hook or By Crook and 30 More of the Best Crime and Mystery Stories of the Year - so far, like most compilations, there are good and bad stories. One just didn't seem to have a purpose
