Hi all - this year we have found many terrific lists and as mentioned there are generally just a few comments for each thread so I think we will try a new approach for 2017 and have one thread to add the lists and keep going throughout the year.

Here is a place to link the lists for everyone to view and comment...

The Last Neanderthal will be the first I run out for, I think.

Mj Re: CBC 5 New Books being released in January 2017

I have an ARC of Juliet's Answer: One Man's Search for Love and the Elusive Cure for Heartbreak in hand and plan to read for the 2017 Bingo - Books Published in 2017.

The author Glenn Dixon was a regular participator in the online CBC Books book club formerly here on Goodreads. I always enjoyed Glenn's comments and insight and am looking forward to reading his new book - a memoir (a genre I generally quite enjoy.)

@MJ - look what I just found on twitter - a review from the Globe & Mail: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/b...

message 13: by Mj (new)

Mj @ ❀ Susan - thanks for the link. I might use Juliet's Answer for the out-of-comfort zone square as imagine I will read more 2017 releases this year. I don't usually read romance so this might qualify. Will have to read it and see. :-)

Just looking at this list now and I think The Last Neanderthal looks so cool. It's an interesting premise for sure.

message 15: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments @Allison, I read Claire Cameron's The Bear last year, and was just lukewarm on it. But this one looks cool, and I'd like to give her another chance.

I just read your review on that one. Capturing the voice of a small child is difficult, and with young kids myself, I can understand being critical. Maybe if I enjoy The Last Neanderthal, I'll give The Bear a try.

Thanks @Rainey - I haven't read too many mysteries in the past couple of years but great to have some suggestions!

Sometimes we all just need a palate cleanser, don't we? I have a small-ish section on my shelf for "funny" books (although I don't often get to them!) From this list, I have Republic Of Dirt : A Return to Woefield Farm and No Relation waiting to be read.

@May - somehow I missed your CBC list of lists - I really do enjoy the ideas that come from these curated lists.

@Allison - this is a great list, we totally need more "funny" books! I have only read No Relation. It was part of One Book One Brant a couple of years ago and seems even funnier since I have friends named Kim Mitchell and Michael Bolton.

Terry Fallis is a great speaker and I have to admit that I enjoy listening to the narration of his podcasts even better than reading his books. His dry, satire kept me laughing during my commutes when reading his other books too!

message 25: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments Well on THAT note, if anyone wants to see Terry Fallis in person, I happen to know that he's coming to Brockville on June 1!

message 26: by ❀ Susan (new)

You should totally go and see him. He is a great speaker and I have been lucky enough to seem him twice. He also came to the Grimsby Author Series for his Poles Apart novel. Of all of his novels, I enjoyed The Best Laid Plans is the best

@Allison - Republic of Dirt was perhaps my favourite read of last year! It is light, it is fun, and it was funny. I have recommended it for occasions that called for a sense of fun. I hope you enjoy it :)

Magdelanye @Rainey, wow, thanks for posting this! I've only read one, Home going, and most of the titles are new to me, but if they're half as great then this list will compensate for the so so CR as an inspiration for the rest of the year.

Rainey | 746 comments Several of my BDA book club reads for the year and 1 rejected book (we select 12 books for the year, and put forward 21).

Those on the shortlist that we are reading this year: The Underground Railroad (April), My Name is Lucy Barton (February), The Mothers (July).

Those on the shortlist that we rejected: Grief is a think with Feathers.

Thanks for sharing Rainey - I have read Homegoing, The underground Railgroud and My Name is Lucy Barton and The Vegetarian. I liked the first 2, was meh about the 3rd (but that might have been as i listened to it on audio) and found The Vegetarian to be absolutely bizarre!

Great that you can add some of these books into your book club!

message 33: by Magdelanye (new)

Magdelanye The tournament sounds fun too! Hope I will be able to follow some.
Actually, I picked up Lucy Barton this week, for my local book club, and the Underground is on my radar. And I remember Susans reaction to The Vegetarian :+). But the rest are all fresh to me.
How I loved Powell's!

Susan | 851 comments The Tournament of Books is a lot of fun. I enjoy reading the decisions each morning and there is usually an upset or two along the way to keep things interesting. I've managed to read 11 of the books in preparation and am hoping to read Homegoing soon (I've been reluctant to dive into this one until I feel ready for it mentally).

Mj I was researching some books today for personal future reading. Based on the positive responses from the Female Indigenous Author recommendations that I posted from 49th Parallel, I thought I would also post the following list from Room Magazine.

@ Barbara - Thanks for mentioning 49th Parallel's great giveaways. Will have to check them out.

The following posting is from Room Magazine and is a wonderful list of 50 Recommended Books by Women of Colour. It includes many Black, Brown, Indigenous and Asian female authors - All Female and All Canadian. Some great Recommendations and Titles!!

Mj ❀ Susan - You're welcome! Don't always share lists....but thought these lists mentioned some new authors and recommendations worth sharing. Have checked off quite a few books for my personal possibilities (authors who were mostly unknown to me or known authors with new books soon to be published). :-)

Allison | 2121 comments For those that like book lists, Chapters/Indigo has put out Top 150 Canadian titles to celebrate the country's birthday: https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/...

Feels a bit same-old-same-old to me. I was also surprised to find that Chris Hadfield made three lists: Biography, Children's and Science.
