Ok I joined for the sake of the buddy read. Can I use my GR app on my phone to post comments?

Netanella | 195 comments Yes you should be able to!

Seon Ji (Dawn) Netanella wrote: "Yes you should be able to!"

thanks! *Excited*

Netanella | 195 comments Awesome!

So, you should know I "cheated" and I started this book last night instead of today. Truthfully, I wasn't sure that I would like it that much, particularly when I skimmed a review that said it was "preachy."

The book sucked me in and around midnight, I had to make a conscious effort to put it down. I finished the first Part I - The Flare and am ready to start on Part Two - The Road to Salvation.

Netanella | 195 comments Truthfully, I did not like the opening scenes with Zeke and the cats, because the scene was created through Zeke's introspection rather than action. I would have preferred something a little more substantial in an opening passage for a post-apocalyptic thriller.

Once the book got started, I loved the unique world of the killer sun and the boiling world in which they live. Any glimpse of the sun is enough to kill you in a matter of minutes, and people's lives are currently tied up with trying to find a safe place to hide during the day. I haven't read a book with this type of set up yet.

How are you liking it?

UUGGH! I wanted to start it last night too but held off! Ok gonna start now.

I'm starting it now. How far you want to go each day? Just so you know, I will probably be constantly comparing to the stand and swan song.. but I will try hard not to.

Netanella | 195 comments Funny that...I'm also reading another book, A Mighty Rolling Thunder, that is very similiar to The Stand. I have not read Swan Song yet, but heard it's really good. I should try to find a way to put it into one of my challenges for the month...

Reading speed is up to you. I like the book enough right now I could finish it by tomorrow. You let me know.

Have you gotten to the character of Elsa in the hospital yet?

Seon Ji (Dawn) I'm waaay behind you. I had a few errands to run. only on page 46. but now ready to crank it. I can probably finish by tomorrow. so far it's not grabbing me. I want to at least know what state their in. I'm at the part where ash and Heather are bicycling to the hospital. swan song will blow you away! I liked it better than the stand. I just did a re read of swan song ..I could read that one over and over

Netanella | 195 comments yea, we might learn about where they are as the story progresses. zeke talks about surviving in the subways, so I'm picturing a big city in the northeast, like boston or new york city. plus, the second story in the first part of the book has characters who were grad students. that part of the country tends to be more educated

Netanella | 195 comments i got really annoyed with ash and heather bicycling off to get meds for a person who is pretty much burnt meat and needs to be put down humanely. every time they come back to their house, they've been ripped off. i would think, since they've survived this long, they would have a little bit more self-preservation skills going on.

Seon Ji (Dawn) oh that pissed me off too. for Christ's sake it's more humane to just put him down. i thought it cruel to keep him alive. I'm on part two now. I also feel the lack of knowing where they are and where they are going is annoying. I also feel there are a lot of unanswered questions. like if the flare burns skin does it burn leaves and trees? clothes? is it really that hard to find a gun? but it is getting a bit better. what the hell happened to Zeke?

Seon Ji (Dawn) spoke too soon. I see he's back now lol

Netanella | 195 comments what about all of those indestructible notes floating around at the end of part one. there was a big deal made that they couldn't be cooked by the sun. So yea, what about plants? I would think also that paint might be peeling from the heat....

starting part two now...

Netanella | 195 comments okay, how does zeke know the word "ungulate" and use it in a post-apocalyptic world? (page 113 of 506, Kindle)

Seon Ji (Dawn) I don't know. it also seems that they aren't too keen on bathing. they've been touching dead bodies yet their first shower is at the wardens house. so far I don't feel very connected to the characters either. I also find d the dialogue awkward. do you feel it too?

Seon Ji (Dawn) also does the RV have air conditioning?

Seon Ji (Dawn) did you get to the archangel? this makes no sense. Colin won't let him die be sure he thinks it's cruel yet when Zeke tries to stop his seizure colm thinks it's compassion even though archangel is suffering more.

Netanella | 195 comments no, not at the archangel part yet. I ahem fell asleep!!

Netanella | 195 comments Ash and Heather just escaped the women's prison.

Here's what's bothering me so far....

Awesome stuff keeps on happening to these people like manna falling from heaven. It doesn't seem real.

Zeke finds a crazy old cat-in-the-basement guy who thanks him for not killing and then gives him a solar-proof tent. Because, you know, he's down like that.

Zeke apparently knows all about living off of cactus and how to avoid hallucinogenic mushrooms. What, was he a founding member of the Burning Man Festival??

Ash and Laura have lead-lined curtains, an RV, and now they've found the warden house complete with piano so Ash can regale us with his idiot savante-like pianist skills.

I can't wait for the archangel...

Netanella | 195 comments i just got through the archangel scene. i agree! wtf was that??

Seon Ji (Dawn) sorry, I fell asleep. lol. too much wine. I agree with all your points! gonna go read some more

Netanella | 195 comments hitting the wine now...!!

Seon Ji (Dawn) lol. maybe it will make this book better.

Seon Ji (Dawn) on part three. it's getting better now.

Seon Ji (Dawn) I finished.

Netanella | 195 comments i'm at 66% - rough morning with the kids.

I got through Zeke getting captured by the people at the Dockyards, and Ash has now been accepted into Salvation. Not sure what I think so far.

How did you like it?

This is where it gets good. But the last 10% really sucked IMHO.
I wrote my review, a very quick one because I didn't feel it warranted more. I gave 3 meh stars. Good but not great.

Read Swan Song. I can Loan it to you. I got it on sale for 1.99 in fact it is still 1.99 if you're like me and like to buy the good ones. Totally worth it.

Seon Ji (Dawn) Oh! and BTW. I have a group. We can use that for a buddy read if you want to do another one again another time. I'm not a "Dangerous Hero" sort of gal..LOL so I will unjoin here after our discussion is over.

Netanella | 195 comments Okay, I can join that group, no worries. I figured a group buddy read thread might attract some interested parties.

We can also post the thread on the page for the book itself (scroll to bottom of the book's page, and you'll see a link that says "start discussion" or something like that.) You don't have to join a group for that, and anyone can see the thread who is on the bottom of the book's page on GR.

Netanella | 195 comments Ash and Metrotron are speaking. There's a whole lot of science versus religion in this book, and I'm wondering where it will end up. I'm also strongly reminded of the Planet of the Apes movies, where earth is abandoned to nuclear waste on the top and the scientific humans move underground.

YES! I dig the whole science vs religion thing but I didn't feel that there was any favoring one or the other. I was also thinking that "Salvation" seemed to Nazi-like for me. I don't know if that was the intention of the author or not but I felt that Salvation was creepy.

Netanella | 195 comments Right now I'm back in the Dockyards and Zeke has just experienced sexual depravity, rat-killing and rabid dogs as entertainment. Now Legion is preaching about humanity's abililty to descend into chaos.

Preachy, preachy.

Seon Ji (Dawn) I actually liked legions character.

Seon Ji (Dawn) yeah the preachiness bothered me too. overdone

Netanella | 195 comments I'm done and my review's posted.

Thanks for reading this with me, Dawn! I really had a great time with this - it's been a long time since I've done a buddy read. Let me know when you're up for something else, or send a buddy reader my way!
