The Inquisitor's Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog

A book reminiscent of the Canterbury Tales, complete with illuminations in the margins!

I fell in love with these three children (and their dog) as they became friends and fought for the force of good.

So Stalking Jack the Ripper (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #1) by Kerri Maniscalco by Kerri Maniscalco had a couple of pictures. There was a blood splatter at the header of each chapter, but there were also occasional scientific figures (see Post-Mortem Methods 1915 , Tubercular leprosy, and Human Hand Anatomized) as well as historical buildings (see The Princess Alice, 1880s, London Necropolis Railway c. 19th century, and Mitre Square c 1925) and even just people of the times (An Afternoon tea, 19th Century and From Hell Letter 1888).

I have mixed opinions about this book. It was so well-researched and steeped in gothic literature with Sherlock Holmes undertones. It felt like a good period piece. That being said, I wasn't 100% on board with the Audrey/Thomas romance. Thomas (Sherlock Holmes basically) felt off. I felt conflicted about Audrey too- she wanted to be independent but was also really naive. I also predicted the ending and really wish it wasn't as simple as it was. I have higher hopes for Hunting Prince Dracula (I'm a huge Dracula fan) and hope it's done well and maybe less predictable.

I originally had this on my TBR as it with the first of the "Jimmy Patterson Presents" publications and, while James Patterson needs to calm himself, I can't deny that everything I've read of his has been compelling!

The issues you mentioned confirmed my fears, however. Noooooo! (I'll just consider it as a possibility for later.)

That sequel sounds like a really cool idea though!

I said the same thing when I sat in of the YA Editor's Buzz panel at BEA last year! (That's where I first heard about this book.) I definitely think that Mr Patterson needs to calm down (what's next, his own book store? Only if it's mystery themed with a crime to solve LOL. Actually that would be kind of cool...get on that!)

The issues did bring me in and out of love with the book, but I would say give it a listen/read during October maybe. I think that's when I will get into book 2. And I would say the mystery was definitely compelling because I did keep reading to figure out who Jack was! So, I am looking forward to a sequel and a little less love angst.

Kari | 32 comments Hmmm.... which one to choose from. I've read so many graphic novels this year that would count toward this. But I guess one that I had initially picked up for me, but ended up reading to my son was... Hello, My Name is Octicorn by Kevin Diller
