Margo (dandylines) The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Non-fiction. Highly recommend. A little slow because of the fantastic detail. Major focus on just 2 of the boys plus some on their coaches and the boat builder. Would have liked the other boys described more. Chilling accounts of Nazi Germany at this time just prior to WWII.
Also a good description of the effects of the depression on a few families. Makes it personal and makes it real.

Stephanie C (the_book_lady) I second Margo - The Boys in the Boat is a fantastic read. I did not feel it was too slow with, though there is a tremendous amount of detail about some of the boat building and skill sets for the athletes. That being said, I loved how the author really delved into the lives of the men...their struggles, hardships, grit and determination that helped them succeed. I also thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of the 1936 Olympics, and how awe-inspiring Germany appeared during that time, especially through the lens of those who did not know what was about to be unleashed on the world.

Cyndy (cyndy-ksreader) | 231 comments I read Dirt by S. L. Dwyer At times a gut wrenching story, at times a total tear jerker, and at other times both. I whole heartedly recommend this Oklahoma dust bowl tale.
