Try writing poetry every day. It forces you to ascribe an emotion to your writing, making it more flowery and expressive. It's improved my writing greatly.
Also, to help with prose specifically, writing scenes and short stories connected or not to your manuscript will always help you improve. Focus on specific verbs, and avoid adverbs and passive voice. Adjectives and metaphors are fun, but don't go overboard. Read as much as you can as well, to get a feel for writing that absorbs you into it.
But lastly, it's very unlikely you will ever be completely happy with your writing. Perhaps it would be better for you to just start on your story, and save improving the writing of it for the editing process.
Whatever you end up doing, good luck, I hope this helps!

The best way to improve your writing is to write more, and then revise it critically. As Lilligan said, try writing poetry.
Also, when it comes time to revise your own work, reformat it into a monospaced font. That changes the appearance so you can see what you've written more easily. Otherwise you can get caught up in what you meant to write and not see what's actually on the page.
