This is our discussion of the short story....

"The Narcomancer" by N.K. Jemisin

From the anthology Epic: Legends of Fantasy edited by John Joseph Adams. See the Epic: Legends of Fantasy anthology discussion hub for more info on the anthology and pointers to discussion of its other stories.

"The Narcomancer" was originally published in Helix 2007 and reprinted in The Mammoth Book of Warriors and Wizardry and can be either read or listened to on-line at podCastle.

Silvana (silvaubrey) One of the best in the series
I know Jemisin from her Broken Earth trilogy and I will definitely read her Dreamblood duology. It is sooo interesting! And it is hard nowadays to find a main character who is likable, kind and also very capable so this is kind of refreshing.

Short story predecessor (both in publication & storyline) to Jemisin's The Killing Moon. A Gatherer who collects the dreamblood of the dying is sent to aid a village beset by bandits who have a magician capable of casting powerful sleep spells. He falls in love with the messenger, and must choose between love and his vows as a Gatherer.

Nice enough story with some decent world building and a generally likable protagonist.

Silvana (silvaubrey) Oh cool, did not know this is a prequel.

I love stories with guilds and stuff, so it was fun finding out there are two in this story (including a male sister! so a gender neutral guild, even better)

Shaitarn Probably my favourite story in the whole collection. I really loved the world building and the characters - it's actually nice to find a hero who doesn't solve all their problems by waving a sword/wand about! Love the unusual magic system, with dreamblood/dreambile, etc. I actually have The Killing Moon on my TBR shelf - I think I'll move it up to my next novel!

Brendan (mistershine) | 743 comments I was unfamiliar with this series, but all the relevant concepts of their religion are explained well enough within the story. I'll echo everyone else and say this story was a very good and has made me think about picking the The Killing Moon.

Silvana (silvaubrey) I will nominate The Killing Moon for the next contemporary novel vote.
