Robert Wright (rhwright) | 74 comments Was surprised to find some of the Targets at a great price at a local used book shop. $1-$2 each. I picked up:

Doctor Who and the Deadly Assassin
Doctor Who and the Monster of Peladon
Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon
Doctor Who and the Doomsday Weapon
Doctor Who and the War Games
Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth

Grabbed them because they were stories I liked and had some cool covers. I have never been one to collect the whole Target line, but they had a few more I could go back for.

My question is, which ones are worth picking up as more than an episode recap? Good writing, breaking formula, adding details, etc. Or is just more enjoyable as a book due to the limitations on budget on TV that aren't limited in the imagination. Very subjective, I know. Interested to hear what everyone thinks. They still have:

The Visitation
Brain of Morbius
Face of Evil
Giant Robot (aka Robot)
Green Death
Logopolis
Planet of Spiders
Carnival of Monsters
Robots of Death
The Daemons
Seeds of Doom
Time Warrior
Meglos
Castrovalva
Arc of Infinity
Five Doctors
Mawdryn Undead
Kinda
Enlightenment
The Dominators
Warriors of the Deep
The Aztecs
Frontios
The Awakening
Time Flight
Android Invasion
Masque of Mandragora
The Space War (aka Frontier in Space)

These are cheaper than I've seen these in awhile, when I have seen them, or what I see them going for online in the past. All were in good condition, likely had lived with one owner since they came out.

So weigh in. Which should I get? (All is NOT an option.)

Of all of these, I've actually only read The Space War (aka Frontier in Space). The novelization expands on the TV story and adds details about the characters and the war with the Draconians. Turned out to be an extremely excellent read.

As for the rest, go with the ones you like best. It's hard when you're spoiled for choices! =0D

[Edited] I have read another book on this list! The Five Doctors. Several times. >facepalms<

Sarah (mollygr) I know it isn't on the list, but if you ever see The Romans out there, grab that immediately. Not only is the episode a fairly comedic one with the First Doctor, but the author decided to take it a step further by having the novel be a series of letters and journal entries from some of the characters; and not always the ones you'd think, either.

Richie The Collector (cyberleader22) I would recommend you go for The Daemons and Space War. Both are written by the original writers with a bit more care and attention than your average 120 page Target novel.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments My picks:
Aztecs
Robots of death
Androids of death
Masque of Mandagora
Five Doctors

It's pretty cool that I started picking up the Targets so I could experience all the stories I had no chance of seeing on TV and now every story on that list is available on DVD.

Gareth (gazhack) | 1 comments I've only just found this thread, so I imagine by now you'll have done your shopping. However its an interesting question.

The Daemons - Barry Letts expands the TV version with a lot more character background and some lovely bits of writing, especially the early sequences around the dig.

Frontios - Chris Bidmead puts in some wonderfully gory elements that couldn't have been allowed in a TV show. The mining machine is a creation of bone and flesh, and Gravis communicates with a severed human head.

The Dominators - Ian Marter turns a dull Troughton story into a taut SF adventure and makes the Quarks actually menacing.

Matthew Kresal | 118 comments I second Doctor Who and the Daemons after having read it earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd also like to recommend Doctor Who: Ghost Light which Marc Platt adapted from his own scripts. As much as I love Ghost Light as a TV story, it works better in prose.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Hey, I liked the Dominators!
The Quarks are creepy and they used the five they had to make it look like there were a dozen of them stomping around.

Shame the BBC fought with the writers and so they never got brought back.

CaptKirk42 Classic Whovian (klandersen) | 184 comments I have enjoyed:
The Five Doctors
The Robots of Death - then look for it's "sequel" a later original BBC novel not a Target Novelization Doctor Who: Corpse Marker

Some of the others from your list that I have or have read I don't remember if I thought anything extra about the novelization.
