The tires gave an awful screech as Adam swung the car around the corner of 55th, blue lights blaring as they weaved between incoming traffic. Kate’s knuckles were curled so tightly around the door handle that they had started to turn white, but she wasn’t about to tell her colleague to slow down - not when this was the first lead they’d had in weeks. She knew they were close the moment the crowds came into view, by the looks of it the patrol team had set up a road block one street over and the crowd - civilians and journalists alike - were all clamouring for a look. Adam slammed on the breaks but Kate was already out of the car before it came to stop, ducking into the crowd with her badge held aloft. They let her through and by the time Kate reached the police tape, Adam was at her side again. They shared a grim look, as Jack Foley - the new kid on crowd control - waved them through.
“It’s not good,” Foley said, with the air of someone who hadn’t seen too many crime scenes, “Hansen will fill you in.”
“Thanks Foley,” Kate replied as the two of them headed towards the scene. Kate felt a familiar chill wash over her as they approached the group of officers and the forensics team, already snapping away with their cameras. She set her expression into one of grim uncertainty as Hansen spotted them and came quickly over. Michelle Hansen was in her late forties with a thin, severe looking face and poker straight blonde hair. She headed up part of the homicide task force and was often the first on the scene whenever a body was recovered.
“Hey - Raleigh, Mueller,” Hansen nodded to each of them in turn, “Forensics have made a start but you’re more than welcome to work around them. We’ve got a positive ID on the victim, Claire Baker, twenty-three worked as a waitress not two blocks from here, Shuckers restaurant you know the one?” Kate nodded, shooting a quick sideways glance at her partner.
“Anyway,” Hansen went on, checking her notes, “This kid, uh - Tony, Tony Martez found her this morning on his way to school.”
“Shit,” Kate muttered under her breath.
“Shit indeed,” came Hansen’s response, “He’s pretty shook up, his Mom’s taken him home now. But he said he wants to help, so if you want to ask him any questions we’ve got the details. I’ve got to go and help Foley with the press, but let me know if you need anything.”
“Great, okay thanks Michelle.”
“No problem,” Hansen gave a grim nod as she headed towards the crowd.
Kate turned to Adam, and grabbed his arm, stopping him before they could approach the scene.
“That restaurant?” she said slowly, looking up at him, “That’s the same one you mentioned this morning? You don’t know this girl do you?”
