Jackie | 82 comments Happy (almost) summer! The poll for June's theme has ended and the winner is an Obscure Book/Author! Is there some completely random book or author that you once heard spoken about and were curious about reading? Give it a try! This theme is somewhat open, so however you interpret this would work.

And look at that, there is even a Goodreads list for it:

Obscure Books

Remember that once you've finished your book(s) for the month, you're always welcome to start a discussion topic in the month's folder (which works best if there are others in the group who have read or are currently reading the book in question) or post your thoughts (or just drop a link to your review!) in the thread below.

And don't forget to vote on the poll for July's theme. The poll for August's theme opened today, so go ahead and check that out, too.

Happy reading!!!

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 101 comments Reading The Provost by John Galt. It was published in 1822 and has only been rated by 14 people so it definitely qualifies.

message 3: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla I started Yes Sister, No Sister My Life as a Trainee Nurse in 1950s Yorkshire by Jennifer Craig read by the author. It has 137 ratings and 35 reviews (mostly favourable - a good sign)

message 4: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I have 3 books I'm going to try reading this month that I think fits the theme Yankee Stranger (Williamsburg, #2) by Elswyth Thane Why England Slept by John F. Kennedy We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

message 5: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (euphemy) | 27 comments I am going to read a couple short stories that I have on my kindle that fit the theme. One being Last Dance of a Black Widow by Bradley Convissar and Boudicca Her Story by Thomas Jerome Baker for now.

message 6: by Silver (new)

Silver I will be reading Anxious Pleasures: A Novel after Kafka which I think of as being obscure for a couple of reasons. I just by chance picked it up as a book sale, and have never heard of it or the author before, but being a fan of Kafka it caught my interest.

And on Goodreads it has very few ratings and reviews.

message 7: by Paula (new)

Paula (eden1013) I'll be reading Blitz Diary Life Under Fire in World War II by Carol Harris and then if I have time before the month ends I'll try Ride the Wind by Lucia St. Clair Robson .

message 8: by Amara, Group Creator (last edited Jun 01, 2014 03:41PM) (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) | 733 comments I'll be reading at least Play Dead (A Dog and His Girl Mysteries, #1) by Jane B. Mason (only 40 ratings to date) as soon as I finish with my current book. Hopefully more.

(view spoiler)

message 9: by Tara (new)

Tara | 35 comments I'm reading Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor. It was recommended to me since I enjoy Octavia Butler's sci fi/fantasy novels.

message 10: by Sparrowlicious (new)

Sparrowlicious | 12 comments I guess my book for this month will be Tales of the Emerald Serpent (Ghosts of Taux) by Scott Taylor because it only has 45 ratings. Rather obscure, huh?
I only know about it because Lynn Flewelling wrote a short story for it (Flewelling wrote the Nightrunner series - some of my favourite books!)

message 11: by Sara (new)

Sara | 57 comments I just finished reading Before the Rain: A Memoir of Love and Revolution and now I am reading A Disobedient Girl. If I have more time, I will read I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

message 12: by La_mariane (new)

La_mariane I'm currently reading Médée by Anouilh. I'm not sure I can count it as an obscure book, given that Anouilh is one of the most proeminent French play-writer, but I had never heard of his Médée before picing this book up...

message 13: by Kristell (new)

Kristell | 33 comments I'll be reading Gateway to Reality by Becca J. Campbell , it has 58 ratings

message 14: by Jasmiina (new)

Jasmiina F (slipperbunny) I have only two books that could probably fit to this theme and I don't feel like reading the other one yet, so I'll be reading something in Finnish: Teräsmiehen morsian from Eve Hietamies. The book has only 11 ratings. I actually think that I've read something from her father (Heikki Hietamies) before but I'm not certain.

message 15: by Jasmiina (new)

Jasmiina F (slipperbunny) I finished Teräsmiehen morsian already. It wasn't really that great, but I remembered what book I've read from her father and I think I liked that one more than this.

Finished it. Well, that was nice. :) I really liked the concepts in this book.

message 17: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I finished reading Yankee Stranger (Williamsburg, #2) by Elswyth Thane which has 42 (43 now) reviews so I thought it worked for this theme. After a slow start I really enjoyed it.

message 18: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla I found another one for me: Bobby On The Beat by Pamela Rhodes .

message 19: by Marty (new)

Marty Selnick (MartySelnick) | 22 comments I'm reading On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City On the Run Fugitive Life in an American City by Alice Goffman . Really interesting book.

message 20: by Jasmiina (new)

Jasmiina F (slipperbunny) I read Just So Happens by Fumio Obata today, a comic book with only 43 ratings. The art is amazing and I found the story interesting. It's about a young japanese woman who lives in London and travels back to Japan when her father dies.

message 21: by Melissa (new)

Melissa We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

I just finished this book, it was on the listopia list for obscure books so I decided to give it a try. This was a rather odd, slightly disturbing kinda sad book but I did think it was really well done and I liked it.

message 22: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) I read My Christmas Cowboy (Cooper's Corner, #4) by Kate Hoffmann My Christmas Cowboy (Cooper's Corner #4)
by Kate Hoffmann which only had 14 ratings.
It is a 2002 series romance in a 20 volume series. I have been weeding my book collection and this was a set to go.

message 23: by Linda C (last edited Jun 20, 2014 12:01PM) (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) I also read I'll Know It When I See It A Daughter's Search for Home in Ireland by Alice Carey I'll Know It When I See It: a daughter's search for home in Ireland by Alice Carey. It has only 49 ratings and is a memoir of a musical theater actress in NYC

message 24: by Anne (new)

Anne | 68 comments The Professor of Poetry by Grace McCleen I will be reading The Professor of Poetry by Grace McGleen which is a free book I won on Goodreads.

message 25: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla Lamilla wrote: "I started Yes Sister, No Sister My Life as a Trainee Nurse in 1950s Yorkshire by Jennifer Craig read by the author. It has 137 ratings and 35 reviews (mostly favourable - a good sign)"
Finished! A very decent read

message 26: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla Finished Bobby On The Beat by Pamela Rhodes . The narrator did a great job. The story is not very gripping

message 27: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 69 comments I read The Romances of George Sand. There are only three reviews and six ratings. I thought that George Sand's life was fascinating, but that the book should have been published as a non-fiction biography rather than a novel.

message 28: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I finished this month with Hiroshimaa book that was listed in goodreads but had no ratings.

It was a quick read with interesting information and short stories of people in regards to the bombing of Hiroshima.
