Taylor (seffietay) Number 4 in our Classics Series is The Professor's House! Remember that at the end of the year we will discuss this along with the other 5 classics featured in Imagining Characters: Six Conversations About Women Writers: Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot, Willa Cather, Iris Murdoch, and Toni Morrison.

We've been kind of limping along. We did have a discussion for Mansfield Park but we really haven't yet started one for Villette or Daniel Deronda. I think we need someone with energy to jump in. So, start talking about Mansfield Park whenever you're ready. I'm hoping to get to Villette in the next week or so and I have the impression that Kat is ready to talk about Daniel Deronda whenever others are.

Taylor (seffietay) Haha limping along! We certainly have been! I've been completely neglecting the classics. I'll pick up Mansfield Park next and get moving :)

Erin (rinvas) | 46 comments Here is a copy of the book online for anyone having trouble finding it. My local library did not have it:

Taylor (seffietay) Has anyone gotten to this one yet? I can't believe it's already October! I've just finished part one of the Professor's House, so far I'm enjoying it

Taylor (seffietay) I'm done! This was a fairly quick read and left me feeling a little unfulfilled, but I did like it. I'm looking forward to reading Imagining Characters so I can see how they analyze it!

So, I finally read The Professor's House! And I loved it! And I thought the discussion in Imagining Characters really added to the experience. It's just such a richly layered story of a man in his 50s finding himself rejecting family life, falling out of love, and with huge chunks of misogyny in there too. Yet we see everything from his point of view, we are so clearly meant to identify with him, in spite of all his flaws. Magnificent, in a really icky way!
