Jennifer (JenIsNotaBookSnob) (jenisnotabooksnob) | 170 comments Just like the topic says, I'm hunting for a good version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

I'm looking for either a William Butcher or Walter James Miller translation, but, I'm looking for a pretty version. I like scientific style sketches particularly, or, at least a book that has the original illustrations.

I read a Dover Thrift version I believe and would like to really experience the book the way it was meant to be experienced.

20,000 Leagues has been mentioned in several other books I've read recently and I would really like to experience a good version of the book one day. :)

Good question! I've been meaning to read this someday myself, but assumed I'd just read whatever Project Gutenberg has for free. However, if there's an attractive illustrated edition, I'd def. consider that!

I had also intended to read the Gutenberg version, however, it turns out that the original translation was pretty bad and left out around 25% of the book. The newer translation is not public domain yet. That's why I'm stuck.. lol So far, all the ones with the better translations of the complete book are just plain ugly.. But, I prefer an ugly book to an incomplete or poorly translated one.

Michael Fitzgerald Yes, this is a definite frustration. Maybe we can hope for new editions of all the great Verne books with lavish illustrations and Butcher translations - on the occasion of Verne's bicentennial in 2028.

Personally, I am looking for (if it even exists) a decent dual language English/French version (with or without illustrations).

I really hate it when translators (if one can even call them that) leave out large amounts of the original.

Xaka I really, really enjoyed the version by Great Illustrated Classics when I was younger, but I've no awareness around how true the translation is.
