Thoughts, comments, or questions about Chapter 1.

I had never really thought of the public school's "forward thinking" as a negative. Nor had I looked at textbooks the way they are described in this chapter. I'm looking forward to the next chapter now!

pg 17 beginning with "Imagine" to pg 18 ending paragraph with "lunch" seems to sum public schools up so well in my visual mind!

I was stunned at the literacy statistics given in this chapter. I am more motivated than ever to personally guide my children's education. This chapter also served to remind me, a parent, that is my God-given responsibility and privilege to be the primary educator of my children. The state of our society was summed up for me in one sentence on page 37: "So personal opinion has trumped universal truth, expediency has displaced goodness, and edginess has shoved aside beauty."

The description of textbooks really resonated with me too. I appreciate the way that textbooks introduce us to many topics, but have seen firsthand how the conclusions drawn in the books are colored by politics, current popular opinion, and, of course, money. When I was in school, the USSR was nothing but a grey area on the map, thanks to the Cold War. I want my kids to have an introduction to topics, choose what inspires them, and study that topic to mastery.

There are a lot of problems with today's education and not making enough progress is one of them. I got my degree and after getting it I felt like I was not able to do anything. I studied hard and got good grades, but there was nowhere to implement that knowledge. I got mad and I started some IT courses which were much more fun to do. If you have been teaching for any amount of time then you know what is wrong with education in the United States. The sad fact is that we are no longer a competitive nation when it comes to education. But even if we continue down this road, as long as our children are under the watchful eyes of a teacher, the educational opportunities that they are given will be diminished. In other words, what's wrong with education today is not just about what is being taught, but the lack of quality education that is being given.
