I haven't read this but I found the same thing happened in Notre Dame de Paris, which contained a very long chapter about all the churches in Paris. 😵
I did both via audiobook and was able to let the history parts sort of wash over me, just picking up bits and then focusing back in when the characters cane back in center stage. I love both with big sloppy adoration; probably in part because I got just enough of the philosophical/historical to season the story.
