I myself could not finish this book. I may yet go back to it one day, but I just couldn't connect with Flavia.

I listened to this book on audio. The narrator was wonderful and really pulled me into the story.

(And with that quote in the review, I was hearing Jayne Entwhistle in my head!)

Yes, you'll need to the audios to read them all. They vary in how good they are, but it is very necessary to read/listen to them in order and Jayne Entwistle does a brilliant job. The second book is one of the weaker ones (I read it in print, though), but the third is better, etc. The latest one is one of the better ones (with one or two weaknesses).
I started the series in print, and it took an entire book or two to get used to the narrator's voice (I had a different, but also very good, Flavia voice in my mind). The audiobooks have finally wiped away my original voice as I have listened to at least 3 of them so far now.
For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”
This book definitely fits the shelf of Quirky. A few of my co-workers recommended this series to me and I am so glad that they did. I can't wait to read/listen to the rest in the series.
Sweet Ms. Flavia.....oh how she reminds me of my 10 year old daughter...her love for science, her drive to know all the answers, to solve problems, oh and her sassiness.
I cannot wait to see what Flavia gets herself into and out of next.
