Rachel Jacob Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys is a well written novel with a unique story that makes you want to read more. The story revolves around the main character, Josie, and how her life experiences as a young girl have an impact on her and make her want to be a more independent adult. The setting is in New Orleans during the 1950's. Josie is the daughter of a prostitute, and everyone in town knows that. Because of this, she is called a plethora of names and is compared to her mother. Therefore, as Josie is growing up, she aspires to do something big on her own and to be somewhere where no one knows Josie.
I feel like Josie’s character is shown as very real and mature. Even at a young age, she knew exactly what to do when she would work for her mom’s boss. Patrick, her best friend and love interest, is definitely a big support in Josie's life. He always tries to help her in any way possible. Josie’s most important goal right now is to go to a really good college, however she is having a hard time to decide. Basically, she is trying to create a new life for herself. This book includes a lot of mysteries as well, however I will not give that away as it is linked to previous incidents that happened and you have to read it to find out. Other than that, Josie does not let others opinions bother her. That is why I feel she handles everything maturely. She is also a very determined character, as she works two jobs. Josie works for her mother’s boss at the brothel as a cleaner and is an assistant at a local bookstore.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book as it was a different from the other books I have read. It was a distinctive mystery novel with other elements that made it that way. Out of the Easy depicts secrets, lies, trust, and friendships all in one and how it can impact one's life. Josie’s life is going well, however all these distractions are thrown at her. I highly recommend this book if you like to read about different twists that a character must solve. A brilliant read!
