What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I remember reading a book as a teen, that had a humanoid woman protagonist and an alien cat who could walk on two legs. The story line was about the woman going to find who murdered her twin sister, and the cat alien pretended to be a earthlike cat to get close to her to also find the murderer. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THAT BOOK. This was first in the series, they went on to have space-faring adventures. And fell in love with each other.
