I'm waiting for my library's copy to be returned so I can read it! :(

Chris Loves to Read | 54 comments I recently read this so won't read again so soon, it will be interesting to read what other people think of this book.

DannyDavies | 4 comments I'll join in with the end discussion as I finished it fairly recently, too.

Skyler Willett (skizzbot) | 5 comments I'm only about 20 pages in and this has a real Cabin in the Woods feel to me. Intriguing...

Shawna (shanisejones) | 4 comments I can see Cabin in the Woods...I also got some Wayward Pines vibes early on.

I started it at like 10 last night and just finished it about half an hour ago. Shit had me shook.

Skyler Willett (skizzbot) | 5 comments I've been just powering through this book the last couple days. Just over 50% done. So far, the lesson I'm learning from this book is kids are the worst.

David Burke | 2 comments This kind of felt like an American Horror Story season to me. So who would you all cast if they were going to adapt this novel for AHS or something else? I see Richard Jenkins as Robert Grim, Denis O'Hare as Steve, Sarah Paulson as Jocelyn, Kathy Bates as Griselda, and Frances Conroy as Katherine.

Add Evan Peters as Jayden. I'd substitude Zachary Quinto as Steve, and use Denis O'Hare as the Colton Mathers

Brian Lassiter (belassiter) | 20 comments I didn't get started on Hex until this past weekend, so I'm only about a third of the way through the book at this point. But I'm starting to struggle with it.

I'm down with the story, but I'm finding that I don't identify with, or even like, any of the characters, with the possible exception of Grim. I'm way more interested in the backstory of Katherine and the town than any of the character interactions taking place.

Is anyone else having a similar experience or is it just me?

David Burke | 2 comments So funny, hopefully spoiler-less story: I went on a rave about how much I was loving this book about half-way through on my Facebook. A friend who is not much into horror, thought my opinion was worth something. This was the message he recently sent me "just finished listening to Hex on audible. Kind of wish I'd never heard about it. Thanks jerk"

Chris Loves to Read | 54 comments yeah... love the concept, the characters leave something to be desired. I don't get some of the breast stuff, a teen poking someone in the breast.. okay.. but why do the kids form up into a breast later?

Christine Allen (bloofer_lady) | 6 comments I really enjoyed this book...up until the last 50 or so pages. Another commentator mentioned Cabin in the Woods and I can see the similarities. Also, I would agree with the observation that teenagers are the worst, particularly in this novel but, as a former teenager myself, I can eek out a little empathy for Tyler and the others, though I think all of the characters including the teens were not very well drawn and I would have liked to have seen them more fleshed out.

Little spoiler discussion below, FYI:

Perhaps I missed it, but was it confirmed that Jaydon played the recording for Tyler? I know Lawrence mentions it to Steve, but what was unclear to me was whether Jaydon did it of his own volition. If so, it would have been nice to have followed up on that with a little confirmation via Jaydons thoughts, etc. Or it's completely spelled out and I'm a lazy reader. Either way, can someone let me know, lol.

As I mentioned above, I found the ending to be problematic. Also, the breast mountain made of children covered in milk and / or pate afterbirth was ridiculous and completely broke the tension for me. Speaking of pate, it was essentially a supporting character in this book which I found to be equal parts amusing and absurd and so I kind of loved it.

Re: Jayden and the recording, they made a point of describing him shaking at the end of one chapter right before a "shaking" person is described playing the recording for Tyler. They also said that Jayden was the only one who had the recording on his phone, and he clearly didn't delete it lol I remember them describing his face when he was supposed to and I went "that lil motherfucker kept it"

Boob imagery aside I really liked it! I enjoyed Katherine a lot, sewn-shut eyes and mouths are really gross and creepy to me so my roommate had to deal with me yelling "NO STOP" a lot

Christine Allen (bloofer_lady) | 6 comments Yep, definitely remember that now. Thanks!

message 18: by Bettie (new)

Bettie Toxic | 7 comments Thought this book was really strong up until the climax. I felt tension building as the book progressed and then it totally fizzled out for me once Steve wakes up in the forest. The fact that he clearly loved Tyler more than his wife and Matt made me really dislike him. Honestly the only character that was likable was Grim, and shit, even the witch was better than any of the assholes in the town.

Alyssa Gray (lycanthropologies) | 65 comments Mod
Yeah I was really into the witch, the idea that she wasn't an evil entity the entire time was really fascinating to me. My favorite idea in horror is that the worst monsters are the ones we make ourselves.

message 20: by Brian (new)

Brian Lassiter (belassiter) | 20 comments I found the premise of Hex to be very compelling. Unfortunately, the execution didn't meet my expectations. I'm not a big fan of the "humans are the real monsters" trope to begin with. And it seemed particularly heavy-handed in Hex.
