Mimi (1stavenue) | 12 comments Just wanted to share a really interesting essay Becky Chambers wrote on tor.com about her writing process and how she writes alien beings and cultures.
I start with biology. I figure out anatomy and reproduction first—often riffing on whatever real-world bug or critter I’m giddy over at the time—and from there, I imagine how that would affect their homes, their technology, their family structures. All of that is indeed how I go about writing aliens, but it’s only half the answer. The other half involves explaining my relatives, which is more than the person asking the question bargained for. But since I’ve been given space to spread out here: I start with biology, yes. Then I start pulling from years of navigating get-togethers with folks from elsewhere.

Mimi! I swear, you read my book-mind. I was just thinking about a thread for misc. links and the like with background on Chambers (perhaps bc it was so helpful for insight on the first book).

Mimi (1stavenue) | 12 comments Oh! I should've thought of that. A new thread for links and news would be nice to keep these things in one place. Sorry about that. Feel free to move whatever is necessary. :)

Inkdeathinbloom | 10 comments I'm in- looking forward to it!

I love she thought of her relatives.

I feel like mine could be aliens, too. O_O

carol. | 126 comments Mod
I could certainly flex on the read time if people want to read later.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 122 comments Mod
I'll try to stick to whatever the group wants to do.

Saphana Hi there,

I'm in. Have you all thought about a timeline already? I'd love to start reading by mid-April (10th to be precise) because I have a couple of days off-work and the season will be over by end of April = more reading time.

Arie (notarie) Definitely!

Mitticus | 2 comments Here. Hm, I'm kind of stretching the date too. Be with you a bit later.

carol. | 126 comments Mod
Well, perhaps me too. I'm finishing up 14 years at my job on April 5, so there's kind of a lot packed in there the first few days.

I just have to get through the next four days, and I should have hours of reading time.

My apologies, I should have mentioned I enlisted MrsJoseph to help with moderating. We used to moderate a group together for many years, and I value her organization skills. Plus, it's always fabulous to have someone this enthusiastic about a book lead :D
