I am doing some of these out of order in relation to reading time available.

April 1: Read a book by, signed by, endorsed by, or dedicated to Satan.: APRIL FOOL'S! (StarMan's idea!)

April 2: Name a book set in the city you were born or raised in. The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova. I can't wait for this book to come out so I can read about my native Sofia, Bulgaria. I only lived there till I was five.

April 3: Read 30 pages or as many as you can. Had to take care of four German Shepherds today so I only got 18 pages read, 11 from Evita: First Lady and the rest from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

April 4: Name a book you would buy for everyone in this group to read if you had the funds. "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. It has a bit of everything if you like non-fiction, military history, and adventure. It is also an inspiring reminder of who we are as human beings.

April 5: Flip to page 5 in a book you are currently reading. Randomly point to a word. List the word here. That word describes your eating habits
My word: (*was"). My appetite was good before I ate a bad potato. Ever since then I have been eating only when I get hungry.

April 6: Name the last best book you read: My Ántonia by Willa Cather . One of the best original immigrant stories ever!

April 7: Name a book that you wish had never been written. The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx

April 8: Read 5 pages and list a new word you learned in those five pages or a word that appeals to you. From "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, the word "cloaks" appeals to me just because of the l and k sounds. I love the combination of those consonants.

April 9: Read 15 pages from the shortest book on your TBR list. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner An Eclipse Novella (Twilight, #3.5) by Stephenie Meyer

April 10: Read from a used book. The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson . Erik Larson is the best non-fiction writer in the world!

April 11: Share your favorite quote from one of your favorite novels: "I am a vampire. If that doesn't prove that superstitious people are right, I don't know what does." -Bree from The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

April 12: Name a book about your favorite topic. Helter Skelter The True Story of the Manson Murders by Vincent Bugliosi . True crime is one of my favorite genres.

April 13: Read 13-20 pages. Combination of Evita, Huck Finn, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Henry's Sisters, and The Devil In The White City.

April 14: Name the books you are currently reading. I'm trying to finish: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner An Eclipse Novella (Twilight, #3.5) by Stephenie Meyer The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson Henry's Sisters by Cathy Lamb Evita, First Lady by John Barnes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

April 15: Name a book you got for free and from whom/where. My psychiatrist let me pick bagfuls of books from his office, and one of them was: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger .

April 16: Name a book that made you actually LOL (Laugh Out Loud). The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain . Mark Twain has a brilliant sense of humor. He is one of the best writers ever!

April 17: Read a non-book (magazine, newspaper, etc.) outside, for as long as you like. (I read an assembly instruction guide for a few seconds outside. lol)

April 18: Pick up the book nearest to you. Turn to page 45, and share the first full sentence with us.
(urban legend says this sentence will describe your love life)
"And then a beam of brilliant light--a ray about the thickness of one of Diego's arms--pierced the darkness of the cave."
(In a way, yes, my husband is the light in my life, and he also helped me see the light and accept Jesus as my savior. I'd be lost without them!

April 19: Name a book whose author's FIRST name is the same as that of your best friend (or sounds sort of similar, if your friend is a space alien). The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl by Matthew Pearl. Matthew is my husband's name, who is also my best friend. :)

April 20: Name the last audiobook you listened to. (If you've never audiobooked, pick one that you'd actually like to listen to one day). I don't do audiobooks or ebooks. Period. A book is not a book unless it's between a spine. Exceptions are made for those who can't have the physical book and have to rely on audiobooks and ebooks.

April 21: What is a book you WISH would be made into a movie, but hasn't yet. None. Books are only meant to be books. Movie versions are only an extra income for the author.

April 22: (Saturday) Visit a local library or bookstore. If none available, visit a thrift shop with books. If you are mobility-challenged, window shop at an online book site (other than GoodReads) instead. This is the perfect excuse to load up my cart on Amazon. Am thinking of getting The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater and Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll .

April 23: Name a book with book(s) on the cover. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

April 24: Read 5 pages in a book of your choice, first thing this morning, before breakfast (even if you don't eat breakfast!)

April 25: List a book given to you as a gift (or alternately, one that you gave as a gift).

April 26: Find a book that has a red cover, or lots of red on it. Turn to page 13, or the closest full page. Flip the book upside down, and try reading the whole page that way.

April 27: Find a book that's good for reading in bed.

April 28: Name a book you've read in secret (at work, during class, or because it's extra-sleazy, etc.)

April 29: Name a book about friendship (or friendship gone wrong).

April 30: Read the LAST chapter first in a book that you haven't started yet. (If pressed for time, just read the last 2 pages).

Reviewing the list, I definitely won't be able to do all of them (a book set in Ridgewood, NJ or teeny, tiny Butler, NJ? Yeah right!) And some of the tasks are not on ideal days (go to the library on Saturday? I go every Monday!)

So... I'm going to pick and choose and do tasks as they suit me :-P
And again, because scrolling is annoying, I'm hiding my tasks in a [spoiler]

Good points, Erin!

Feel free to get a little creative with the tasks (which I like to think of as a book/book-task scavenger hunt). Thank Allison for the original idea :)

Can't do a task on the given day? Do it on a day that's better for you... swap days, whatever...

No books set in your hometown? Instead, list a book set in a town close to you or a town you like... or a book that reminds you of your hometown for some reason. (Even if you were born on a Carnival cruise ship, there are books to match!)

Are you super-busy on Mondays? Skip the Monday tasks, and do them on a different day (double-up that day).

As long as you get 'em done (with or without some creativity), it's all good. And if you don't get all 30 done, so what? You've hopefully still had more fun this month than you would have otherwise. And maybe you even found some interesting books or places or ideas along the way.

Or feel to be OCD about it, if that's what suits you. If you are a stickler, and a certain day's tasks are impossible for you or don't apply to you, then "N/A" (not applicable) might be a perfectly acceptable entry for that day!

Thanks for joining, Erin! Sorry about our tasks being in a weird order, but StarMan is right. You can switch them on days when you can do it. I did that last month when I couldn't read a certain number of pages on one day so I switched it with the task for the next day. Whatever fits your schedule is good! And it's awesome that your husband is your best friend. I also look forward to reading Lauren Graham's book!

StarMan (thestarman) | 1942 comments Erin, 'Wool' has been optioned for a movie, and has been under 'development' since 2012... so maybe it will happen one day. Ridley Scott (director of Blade Runner) is involved, which sounds promising.

message 16: by Kelsey (last edited Apr 30, 2017 12:16PM) (new)

Kelsey My Book Tasks

April 1: Read a book by, signed by, endorsed by, or dedicated to Satan.
April Fools!

April 2: Name a book set in the city you were born or raised in.
My hometown city was referenced once in Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, and in many of his other novels, he uses the fictitious Ilium as a setting, which a lot of people think is a reference to my city! You'll have to do a smidge of research to figure out what it is :)

April 3: Read 30 pages or as many as you can.
I technically didn't read a "book" but I did work on the novel I'm writing, and what I wrote and reread was over 30 pages, so I think that counts?

April 4: Name a book you would buy for everyone in this group to read if you had the funds.
I would buy The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins for everyone. It's long, and it is Victorian literature, but I do think a lot of people in this group would enjoy it! It's not a dense read, and the characters are written superbly well. The mystery is also really intriguing, too!

April 5: Flip to page 5 in a book you are currently reading. Randomly point to a word. List the word here. That word describes your eating habits.
I got different, which I think definitely applies. I'm a very picky eater, and internally freak out if one food on my plate touches another food that's also on my plate.

April 6: Name the last best book you read.
The last best book I read is a toss up between History of Wolves and The Bean Trees. Both amazing, amazing books, that I read in March.

April 7: b) A book whose cover is black and white, greyscale, or as un-colorful as possible. I'm doing this alternate option, because I didn't get to read the shortest book on my TBR. To be honest, I have so many, and I don't feel like going through them to see which one is the shortest! Anyway, I found this book It's the Stars Will Be Our Lamps by Alan Walsh, which I think definitely qualifies as a super un-colorful cover!

April 8: Read 5 pages and list a new word you learned in those five pages or a word that appeals to you.
I read out of American Housewife, and the word malice stuck out to me. I know what it means, but the particular passage was funny.

April 9: Name a book that you wish had never been written.
Fifty Shades of Grey, because from what I hear, it gives off a very bad impression of what that culture is all about. I've never read it, and never plan to, but from what I've gathered over the years, the relationships in the book aren't healthy.

April 10: Read from a used book.
I am! I'm reading Letters From Home, which is used. I'd actually say that about 60% of my books are used.

April 11: Share your favorite quote from one of your favorite novels.
“In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.” The Great Gatsby

April 12: Name a book about your favorite topic.
Band of Brothers E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest by Stephen E. Ambrose
WWII is my favorite part of history.

April 13: Read 13-20 pages.
Done. I read 43 pages of Letters From Home.

April 14: Name the books you are currently reading.
I should be finishing Letters From Home today, and I'm going to start The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story and Lost in Shangri-la: A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II soon. I'm also hoping to read The Swans of Fifth Avenue soon!

April 15: Name a book you got for free and from whom/where.
My best friend got me The Postmistress while she was in Normandy!

April 16: Name a book that made you actually LOL (Laugh Out Loud).
A lot of what I read makes me laugh, because I'm one of those people that find a lot of things to be humorous, but one of the books that never fails to make me laugh when I read it is The Catcher in the Rye. I also laughed a lot while reading Letters From Home!

April 17: Read a non-book (magazine, newspaper, etc.) outside, for as long as you like.
I spent my day shopping, but I did look through a magazine in the car, while the window was down. Does that count? :P

April 18: Pick up the book nearest to you. Turn to page 45, and share the first full sentence with us.
(urban legend says this sentence will describe your love life)
The first full sentence on page 45 of The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story is: "Radiocarbon dating indicated the bottom layers were thousands of years old." I don't know how well that describes a love life, but I do feel like mine is a thousand years old, because I haven't dated anyone for six years! Lol.

April 19: Name a book whose author's FIRST name is the same as that of your best friend (or sounds sort of similar, if your friend is a space alien).
I have too many best friends, so I'll just go with my brother :) The first author that came to mind is Seth Grahame-Smith.

April 20: Name the last audiobook you listened to. (If you've never audiobooked, pick one that you'd actually like to listen to one day).
I've never listened to an audiobook, and honestly, I don't think I ever will! I just know that once I start listening to it, my mind will drift, and I'll miss pages or even chapters. If I had to choose an audiobook to listen to though, I would choose the Hamiltome, or Hamilton: The Revolution, because it's read by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who I love.

April 21: What is a book you WISH would be made into a movie, but hasn't yet.
Code Name Verity! It's a book about women spies in WWII, and I think as a movie, it would be soooo awesome :).

April 22: (Saturday) Visit a local library or bookstore. If none available, visit a thrift shop with books. If you are mobility-challenged, window shop at an online book site (other than GoodReads) instead.
Well, Tuesday through Saturday I work in a library, so this task is done! :)

April 23: Name a book with book(s) on the cover.
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

April 24: Read 5 pages in a book of your choice, first thing this morning, before breakfast (even if you don't eat breakfast!)
I forgot to do this, but I read while I was eating, so I think it semi counts!

April 25: List a book given to you as a gift (or alternately, one that you gave as a gift).
I just gave my friend Basil for her birthday. Wilkie Collins is one of our faves!

April 26: Find a book that has a red cover, or lots of red on it. Turn to page 13, or the closest full page. Flip the book upside down, and try reading the whole page that way.
The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin is right by my bed, because I plan on reading it next! I tried reading the page upside down, as to not give anything away, and it was a lot harder than expected :)

April 27: Find a book that's good for reading in bed.
All of them! But generally I read paperbacks, which make it easier. If I have a hardcover book, I can almost 100% guarantee that it's a library book!

April 28: Name a book you've read in secret (at work, during class, or because it's extra-sleazy, etc.)
I've actually never read a book in secret.. I don't read anything that focuses on sexual content, so I haven't had to really hide anything!

April 29: Name a book about friendship (or friendship gone wrong). The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

April 30: Read the LAST chapter first in a book that you haven't started yet. (If pressed for time, just read the last 2 pages).
Done. I read the last two pages of The Swans of Fifth Avenue because I didn't want to see how it completely ends! I plan on reading it very soon :)

4/11/17 - Easter: Spring vacation usually falls around Easter time. The schools are closed and all the eggs get 18 weeks off. The yellow teachers also get a vacation. There are lots of things to do during Easter vacation. Some kids loaf around and watch the bunny. Others get outside and play Scrabble, while more ambitious students spend their time studying their fluffy books so they will grow up to become shoes. Little kids also color cute eggs. Here's how you color an egg: first, mix a package of young dye in a bowl full of lemonade. Then, dip a basket in the bowl and rinse it off with water. Then, after it dries, you can paint it with a brush. Then you show it to your friends, who will say, "Boy what a purple egg!"

I'm almost caught up on my tasks. I did them on different days. So re-reading through y'all's answers, my thoughts:

StarMan:
I agree about Mein Kampf. Some people read it and think it's a manifesto to be carried out.

Never Let Me Go was a unique but intriguing book. I gave it 4 stars, too, I think.

Kelsey: I read The Postmistress a few years ago. Did you like it? I liked the concept, but the character development was too dry.

Make sure you let us know when your book comes out so we can read it for our monthly book. :)

I've actually tried to get through the book about three times, but I could never get into it :/ I want to like it so much, so maybe I'll try it again this summer.

I will! Though it might take another year or so :) But it's about spies in WWII, so I think our group might enjoy it!
