Shounen Manga Book Club discussion

Amano Yukiteru is a 2nd year high school student who’s content to watch the world pass him by and make notes in his cell phone diary. He contents himself with his imaginary friend Deus Ex Machina, Lord of Time & Space. His time as a spectator comes to an end however when the not-so-imaginary after all Deus changes his diary to record future events, and forces him to participate in a game where the survivor will become Deus’s successor.

I read vol 1 last year and liked the premise but found the pace a bit breakneck.

Just reread it, and liked it more this time. Still wish they had taken it a little slower and there are a couple of important plot points mentioned in passing instead of being properly explained, but the characters and diaries are nicely varied already, and I'm finding this pretty compelling.

I want to read more, but the anime's more readily available to me so I might switch over to that.

What does everyone else think?

I watched the anime a while ago, but from what I've heard, the two aren't that different.

My biggest complaint was that despite the "free-for-all" set up for the competition, the battles were very much not that way. Everyone went after Yukiteru without fail. No one tried to kill each other. It started becoming really predictable by the second adversary.

"Oh look, another new character. Bet they have a diary and are out to get Yukiteru." I swear I said that every time, and every time I was right.

Shame to hear that. There's definitely a lot of room in the setup for more than a "villain of the week" progression.

Although (view spoiler)[ in vol 1 he's essentially bait to draw someone else out, with 9 not really trying to kill him, just using him as a convenient way to get at 4. (hide spoiler)] Was hoping for more in that vein going forward.

The Next upcoming read is the Future Diary, I want to know if you only discuss the first volume or the whole manga?

As for myself, I don't know that I'll be able to get ahold of more volumes (and as I mentioned above I may switch over to the anime), so for now I'm just reading/discussing the first.
