Cody Sisco (codysisco) | 2 comments Hi all,

I recently learned that my first novel, Broken Mirror, was accepted into the SELF-e Select program. It appears in a few different collections and modules, including Indie California and Science Fiction.

I'd like to start approaching libraries about doing events and would like to hear some advice and perspective on what has and hasn't worked for all of you. I'm based in Los Angeles and have ties to the SF Bay Area so I plan on highlighting the "local writer" angle.

My main question is who to approach. I have some relationships with branch libraries in the LA and Pasadena systems because I co-organize a weekly writing critique group. Beyond those limited contacts, I'm not sure if it makes sense to contact events coordinators, collection development staff, or others within library systems. Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance for your ideas and input!

Victoria Noe (noewoman) | 8 comments First, congrats!

I'd first check to see which libraries/library systems participate in SELF-e. Saying you're a SELF-e author and your ebook is in their collection is a great opening. Start with those you know, because the already established relationships will make things easier. Once you've reached out to the ones you know, then expand your reach. And be sure to ask how they acquire print books. That will vary.

I'm a member of Chicago Writers Association and we have a speakers bureau, to let libraries and other groups know what topics our members can present. Do you belong to any kind of group like that? If not, list your speaking topics on your website.

Good luck!

Cody Sisco (codysisco) | 2 comments Hi Victoria,

Thank you for the advice. I contacted the SELF-e team, and they've been very responsive. I got a list of libraries in my state that are participating in the program and they've offered to help make introductions.

Also, thank you for suggesting local author groups. There are quite a few in my area so I'll do some research on which ones are focused on making connections with libraries.

Thanks again,

Cody Sisco
