It's not teen/YA at all, just a good creature feature slasher

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) | 397 comments I loved this one way back when I 1st read it- it is 'deeper' if you will than his straight-up horror genre stuff. It's much more literary. HOWEVER, once you've read THE DARK TOWER series, then INSOMNIA becomes all kinds of extra important!! (Hence why I re-read it this summer, because of its Dark Tower connections).--Jen from Quebec :0)

I remember being a kid and ogling this at my fave now closed Coliseum Books in NYC in 1994, trying to find a good copy on the net now.

Canavan | 600 comments I was thinking about reading this (in fact, I’ve actually looked at the first few chapters), but am a bit put off by the suggestion that in order to fully appreciate the novel, one needs to be familiar with the Dark Tower series (which I may never get around to reading).

NO NO! The REVERSE is true-- Reading INSOMNIA is wonderful no matter what- having read The Dark Tower or not. But, if you HAVE read The Dark Tower, it makes The DARK TOWER a bit more fun, not Insomnia, IMO! INSOMNIA is amazing no matter what! (And, if you're ever confused or something, I would be glad to help you figure things out- BUT- I think you'll be OK). Like I said, the 1st time *I* read INSOMNIA I had not read The Dark Tower at ALL and yet I loved Ralph and his sleepless ways from Day 1! ---Jen from Quebec :0)

I was obsessed with it, I spend so much time there :)

Kilgallen | 79 comments This is my favorite of the King books!

Joel Werley | 60 comments I've read every Stephen King book (except for The Tommyknockers, for some reason) and Insomnia might be the least enjoyable of any of his books. The Shuddering was great however, but I've read it too recently to go through it again. So, I guess it's a month off for me this time!

E. | 86 comments If I see several people reading/discussing I will join in. I'm overloaded with books at the moment. I don't want to get this one right now if there's not an active participation.
I've read most of King's books. This is one of the few I haven't.

your spoiler encouraged me to finish the book and that was exactly what I thought when Ralph (view spoiler)

Yeah, I have that initial response to a lot of King's work. You're rolling right along and everything is fine and then (view spoiler)! I should know by now to expect it, but it can still be a bit jarring.

message 24: by Tim (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tim Gunter | 154 comments Slowly pushing my way through. For some reason it always feels like it takes me forever to get through Stephen King books. On page 158 currently, and so far not much has seemed to happen at all really. (view spoiler)

message 25: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I love this book. I saw an interview with King and was surprised this is his least favorite book. He didn't like it because his idea for it was the ending and he felt forced through the whole story to get to the right ending. According to him he usually just starts with an idea and a few plot points and lets the story and characters show where it needs to go.

It doesn't matter to me how he got there, I still enjoyed it.

I've been training at work so I haven't got to listen as much.

Interesting. His endings tend to be pretty weak, but I liked the way the story flowed toward the ending. It may not be his favorite way to write, but it certainly seems save readers from the way his stories tends to fizzle out in the end.

Having heard this, it makes me more excited to get through this one. I love King's stuff, but I've come to always brace myself for a less than stellar ending. So it's making me hopeful this one may finally be the one to buck that trend and have a somewhat satisfying one. Time will tell though I suppose since I'm still only just past the halfway mark.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod
I'm giving up on this one. It just keeps going on & on!

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) Idk about this one. I'm at page 300, and all it is so far is kind of an edgy cozy.
