>
ONE - START HERE - 2017 - Readathon Eleven Date: April 8th, 2017 - 8AM to Noon - Check- In - CHECKPOINT ONE - FIRST CHECK IN
Remember folks this is the check in for anybody reading during the hours of 8AM until Noon on April 8th (wherever in the world you are - use your time zone). If you want to get credit for any reading done during these four hours you must check in on this thread - Checkpoint 1. But for the check in to count - you must post between the hours of 8AM to Noon on April 8th in the time zone that you are in. This is the Checkpoint for those hours on April 8th. To get credit for these hours this is the thread you must post on
REMEMBER AT LEAST ONE CHECK-IN MUST REFLECT THE FOLLOWING TO BE COUNTED IN THE READATHON AND OF COURSE YOU MUST CHECK-OUT AT THE END.
Make sure to answer the following:
REMEMBER AT LEAST ONE CHECK-IN MUST REFLECT THE FOLLOWING TO BE COUNTED IN THE READATHON AND OF COURSE YOU MUST CHECK-OUT AT THE END.
Make sure to answer the following:

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.
How much time did you read during this block of time:
Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they?
Also, your location in the world and timezone
DETAILED EXAMPLE AND EXPLANATIONS
This is how your template could look when you sign in - you can put in the blank template which you will finish up a half hour before the end of the check in time in your location and then post the blank template in the check in - this is check in one and then you would go to check in two and do the same thing again with the blank template and then add the additional pages read etc.
So at the beginning - you would check in.
Hi, this is Bentley - checking in from New York City - Metro New York City area - New York/New Jersey - USA - Eastern Standard Time - giving my name, my city/state location - country would be USA - and my Timezone.
Then I might post the blank template because I am just signing in as follows:
Folks I am going to read Black Flags for starters or Lindbergh by A. Scott Berg
by
Joby Warrick
by A. Scott Berg (no photo)
Here is where you post the citations of any books that you would be sampling or reading during this check in time period. Notice that each check in is a four hour block of time and where ever you are in the world you should be reading during that time period on that date for that check in and posting during that time period wherever you are locally.
Then the remainder of the blank template would be:
Genre: In the case of the book that I am reading - Non Fiction - Middle East
Start Page: 1
End Page: The last page you have read during this four hour time slot
Total Pages Read: Here you put in the number of pages you read totally in all of the books sampled during this time slot
Total Hours Read: Here you would put in the number of hours or actual time you spent reading during this time slot
Total Books Read: Here you put in the number of books you are sampling during this time slot and reading - you could be reading two or more books at the same time but you could also just be reading one
Total Books Completed: Here you put in the number of books you completed during this time slot
Location: NYC (Metro New York area) - NY/NJ - USA - Eastern Standard Time (EST)
On location - put in your city, state, country wherever you are generally - of course protect your privacy - and add your timezone - in my case I added Eastern Standard Time and the abbreviation EST
And if I completed the book that I was reading in this time slot - I would add the full citation at the bottom

EASY SAMPLE OF TEMPLATE AND HOW YOU SIGN IN FOR EACH OF THE SIX CHECK INS - EACH CHECK IN REFLECTS A SPECIFIC FOUR HOUR AND DISTINCT BLOCK OF TIME/DATE IN YOUR GLOBAL LOCATION
You have to sign in for each check in point out of six Check INs that you want to get official credit for: (THE IDEAL IS TO READ FOR ALL 6 BUT THAT IS HARD TO DO) - each four hour block of time is for a specific time slot - check in one is for 8AM until Noon on April 8th. The minimum time spent on the readathon allowed is one hour out of 24 and a mandatory check in - of at least one Check In and the mandatory Check Out which is your final official tally. The check ins have one template and the check out is different and is the final tabulation point with its own template. Remember the ideal for the readathon is to make and check in at each of the official check in gates (there are six) and then officially check out the next day at the CHECK OUT THREAD - which is always Check Point Seven.
OK here is how I would sign in and I would fill in the blanks that I know at the beginning of the time slot timeframe and then I would complete the template at the end of the four hours and then do the same thing moving to Check In Two.
I am showing you a sample of how I sign in for Check In one absent any explanations

Caroline R and John Dawson of Melbourne, Australia AND Zhengyang Huang of Yangzhou, Jiangsu, CHINA and ShawnLeeZX of Central District, Hong Kong
I know all of you are new to the Readathons - but the way they work is that we have six gates which you pass through and prove that you have been reading during these four hour time slots. That means you sign in on each check in thread at the beginning of the four hour timeslot and before the end of each four hour timeslot - you complete that template for that block of time and move on. That is how you prove that you have read during the time period because you have posted and signed in to each one of the check in - checkpoints that you want to get credit for.
So to get credit for the 8AM to Noontime timeslot where you are - you should have posted the blank template here on this thread and then right before the end of the four hour block - fill in the details for this block of time and complete the Check In - Checkpoint One template so that you could then do the same thing over again when you move on to the next gate which is Check in - Checkpoint Two. You have to post that you are here and reading by posting the template. We will help you if you are confused.
You do not have to do all check ins if you are reading during all of those time periods - you will just not get credit for that check in gate and time slot. You have to check in and post and update your template for at least one check in - checkpoint - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 or all six and somewhere in between and then tomorrow you have to do your tallies and check out on Checkpoint Seven which is the mandatory and only check out thread.
I am curious where you guys are and if you need my help. I am here.

Roberto Brazao Gomes - Netherlands (Central European Time) - Start Time is 8AM Saturday - Netherlands (Central European Time) - 4/8 which for Bentley is earlier than his start time - for Bentley your start time will be seven hours earlier than Bentley which would be 1AM on 4/8 - Roberto you would be starting at your 8AM on 4/8 - but you would be ahead of the folks in New York by 7 hours
21. Maria Kruglova - London, H9, The United Kingdom - GMT - 5 hours earlier than Bentley - Maria Kruglova - you will be starting at your local time of 8AM on 4/8 which is actually 5 hours earlier than Bentley in NYC so for Bentley you are starting at Bentley's 3AM on 4/8 so he will be looking for you.
45. Sibel Mutlu- Istanbul, Turkey - 7 hours ahead of New York City - TRT – Turkey Time (Standard Time) - Sibel you would be starting and posting here at your 8AM on April 8th but you will be starting 7 hours ahead of Bentley in NYC at Bentley's 1AM
47. Chloe - London, UK - GMT + 1 (British summer time) - 5 hours later than NYC - Chloe you will be starting five hours earlier than we will be in New York City - so you will be starting at 3AM NYC time which will be your 8AM
54. Margarita - Margarita, what is your closest city - The United Kingdom and where are you in the United Kingdom - what specific country - and timezone? - you are at least 5 hours ahead of us. So you are starting early and will post your check in here. Need more information from you
57. Anna Johnstone - what country in the UK are you reading from - could you let us know a closer city, country, etc. you can still maintain your privacy - I post Metro NYC, NY - EST - It is OK that you are not able to do 12:00 to 17:00 - post in the check ins when you are reading and then you must also do the mandatory Check Out the following day which is easy to do. You do not have to check in and read for all six check ins so there is no problem with your battlefield training for reenactment - I will assume for now you are 5 hours ahead and that you will be posting and checking in 5 hours before 8AM NYC - so you will be starting at 3AM EST time which will be your local time of 8AM - so use your local time. I will assume that you are GMT + 1 (British summer time) for now
58. Doris Smith - Kusadasi, Turkey - TRT - you are 7 hours ahead of Bentley in NYC so you will be starting at 1AM EST time which is 8AM your local time. So you will be out in front starting with Australia.
64. Kim Verstraeten - Belgium, Central European Summer Time - what city are you closer too. Bentley uses Metro NYC, NY -EST - it appears that are going to start with this check in thread 6 hours ahead of NYC so you would be starting at 2AM Bentley's NYC time - I do not have more information from you so that is my assumption - use your local time - 8AM - 4/8 as the start time
The 1AM folks which have a 8AM start time in their local country timezone.
a) Roberto
b) Sibel
c) Doris
The 2AM folks which have a 8AM start time in their local country timezone.
a) Kim
The 3AM folks which have a 8AM start time in their local country timezone.
a) Maria Kruglova
b) Chloe

Dianne it is too early for your to start the Readathon. You need to wait until 8AM in your location.
Right now it is 7:30AM so you only have another half hour.
When it is 8AM then you can post your hello and do a copy and past of the blank template like I showed above or like Lorna did in message 32 filling in the details that are unique to your reading that you can fill in.
Lorna first has the citation of the book she is reading.
Then she copied the template - you can put in the genre for starters and what page you are starting on for your book. And then you can add the details for what you completed for this four hour period 15 minutes before the time block ends. So around 11:30 or 11:45 - fill in the details for this first time block and tell me you are signing out of this time block and then you would sign in to the next Check In - Check IN Two which is the time block beginning at Noon.

Hello Monica A from the Big Apple
Delighted to have a newcomer with us. First we are glad you are here and we will help you along.
The first thing you need to learn how to do is citations.
This is how your citation should look at the top - however you picked a tough one because your selection does not have a book cover on goodreads so you have to add the link and in front of it say (no image). Then add the book link because there is no cover and then the word by put in manually leaving a space before the word and a space after it. Then normally you would add the author's photo but there is no photo of this author on goodreads so you add the link which is the author's name in linkable text and the words (no photo) in parentheses following it. I have shown you how to do your citation below. You can always get more help on the Mechanics of the Board thread which is in the Help Desk folder on our site.
(no image) Six Years in Hell: A Returned Vietnam POW Views Captivity, Country, and the Future by Jay R. Jensen (no photo)
Now let me address the remainder of your template.
You have the following:
- Genre(s): Non-fiction, Memoir, History, Vietnam War
- Location/Time zone: NYC, Manhattan, Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST)
- Starting time: 8:00am (EST)
- Starting page: 1
You should have these lines added this way because we have posted the template. You do not need hyphens at all either.
Genre: Non-fiction, Memoir, History, Vietnam War
Start Page: 1
End Page: TBD
Total Pages Read: TBD
Total Hours Read: TBD
Total Books Read: TBD
Total Books Completed: TBD
Location: New York City, New York, EST
If you put together how it should look - here is your complete blank template which you post in each check in before you circle back and place the completed details in it 15 minutes before the end of each time block.

Hello Mary Ellen - you are doing a great job.
Welcome to you from beautiful central Florida.
You are off to a great job with your template - just use that template for all of the check ins - and fill in the finished and updated details each time - This is the template that you would use for Checkin - Checkpoints - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. And then at the end of the Readathon - you would checkout on Checkpoint Seven and use the tally template. But you have down the check in template pitch perfect.
Now you have to circle back at 11:45AM and fill in the blanks and update this Check In template but you are doing great.

And a good morning to you Fiona from Ottawa, Canada in the Eastern Time Zone. We are always happy to have one of our dearest neighbors with us. A giant big Apple hello!
Just a few things on the template - you should do a copy and paste of the one that I have posted as the example - it will make your time at the Readathon so much easier. Once you get your check in template right - then you can just do an edit, copy and paste and use that template customized for you for all of your checkins - that would be Check In 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 which correspond to specific time blocks of time.
This is what you have - I will show you what yours should look like now.
Fiona has posted the following:

Note: this effort was great but you need to go back in and add the author's link after the author's photo.

Now your template - you have posted the following:
Genre: YA fiction
Start Page: 263
End Page: 317
Total Pages Read: 54
Total Hours Read: 45 mins/0.75hr
Total Books Completed: 1
There are a few problems with the above. First the Genre line is fine, the start page is fine, but you would not be filling in the blanks until the end of the time block so I have no idea why you filled in the total pages read as 54 since you have another hour or so to the end of the time period. Unless you just stopped this 4 hour time block at 45 minutes. I do not understand. You are also missing your Location line at the bottom even though you gave this information in your greeting - it needs to be added in both spots.
So I think your sign in template should look like this:

Andrew Smith

Dianne from British Columbia of Canada - another warm welcome to our friends in Canada. I can see this is your first time and that is ok - we are here to help you.
We have posted templates for a reason to make things easier for you and you should take advantage of them. You will find that things go real smooth for you for all of the other check ins. It looks like I am seeing a bunch of books listed - not cited properly and no template.
So let me try to explain a few things. The Readathon is a live event - so you need to be actually reading and posting during the time block that you have signed in to. That is why we have 6 four hour sign in blocks of time for the Readathon which equals the 24 hour time period and then we have the Check out thread which is our mandatory check out and tally point for all of the six check ins and that is where you tally everything up tomorrow. There is a second template for that. So there are two templates that you must use. The check in template for check ins 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 and the check out template which is used by everyone in 7.
You decided to read during this time block which is from 8AM to Noon your local time. So right now it is probably 8:30AM where you are and you have another 3 and 1/2 hours to go for reading in this timeslot. At 11:45 AM your time - you would circle back to your template here and fill in the blanks and then you would do an edit, copy and paste and use your completed template as your sign in template for Check In Two and so on. Once you are in Check in Two which would be around Noon or a little after your time - you would post the beginning point of your revised template there and then 15 minutes before the end of Check Point Two at about 3:45 PM you would complete the template in Check Point Two and move to the next check in and sign it there. So right now what should your sign in template look like is the big question:
First the greeting following by the blank template aside from a few fields - remember you will be filling in the blanks at 11:45 AM.
Hi this is Dianne from British Columbia, Canada signing in for Check In One.

Please let us know who is reading during these this period of time.
Let us know the following:
So for example:
The Jewel in the Crown by Paul Scott
If you finished a book - let us know that too and make sure to get it added to your readathon shelf so you can get credit for it. If it is added properly it will show up on your shelf. You have to make sure to have selected a readathon shelf and when you are done with the first book for your readathon - make sure to add the completed date and that the book is read versus currently reading.
It will show up on your shelf if you have done this properly.
Remember wherever you are you can participate in the readathon.
And if you only have one hour or four hours or plan to do this for the entire 24 hour period taking of course breaks for eating and sleeping - you can join for however long you want to read. We want to keep track of the books completed, the books started, the books in progress, the number of pages read by all, and the different genres. Great fun and this is only the eleventh readathon - we will use the same readathon challenge for all of them so you can see your readathon shelves grow.
Additionally these books that you complete on the readathon can be added to other shelves for the Japan or Ireland challenge or the 2017 50 Books Challenge or the goodreads yearly challenge - the sky is the limit. Any genre is welcome.
