I've just started The Medusa Frequency - I'm only a few pages in and so far it's extremely odd and very intriguing.

In case , like me, you've been trying to work out what the Kraken has to do with Eurydice and Orpheus - the answer appears to be that Mr Hoban identifies it with the snake that killed Eurydice.
"The Kraken" (1830)
Alfred Lord Tennyson
Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides: above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumbered and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages and will lie
Battening upon huge sea-worms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

I love that poem - it's cool!
I've just finished The Medusa Frequency and it was a bit crazy. Brilliant writing, loved some of the images, liked Hoban's take on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, wasn't sure what was going on for most of the book ;) I debated with myself over whether to give it 3 or 4 stars so have gone with 4 for the moment depending on whether it stays with me or not.

I loved it - like you I wasn't entirely sure what was going on some of the time - but I absolutely loved it .

I think this comment could apply to any Russell Hoban book :0)
