Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments I have the book but will not get to it until about easter. I am currently reading and enjoying Himself, a series of short stories, the wind up bird chronicle and the Mare. So I need to finish at least two of them before starting another book. Has anyone else started the book yet?

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Do you remember whether you liked it when you read it years ago Emma? It's interesting to see how tastes change over time.

Margo I read Fire in the Blood a few years and I really enjoyed it. I would like to join this read but I don't think I'll fit it in - I'm a bit over committed this month!

Sandrine Brisset (sandrinebrisset) | 6 comments For those of you who enjoy short stories, Suite Francaise should be a pleasant read due to its patchwork composition. The main movements are composed of short pieces very much like short stories.

It was a huge international best seller when it came out in 2004. The story behind the publication was also fascinating: a lost and found manuscript, like a voice surfacing from the past.

Fire in the Blood is good but Suite Francaise is superior by far. You can feel that, as Irene Nemirovsky knew the end was drawing close for her, she gave Suite Francaise her very best. In a sense this book is a bit like an unfinished swan song.

Well worth it!

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Thanks Sandrine. It's nice going into the read knowing something of what to expect.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Okay, I have my copy ready to read on the way in on the Bus tomorrow.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments I am only on page 70 but so far I am loving it. I am only sad that it was never finished (for both reasons).

Donna McCaul Thibodeau (celtic_donna) | 1150 comments Well, I did my best but this one just wasn't my cup of tea, it goes on my not-finished shelf. I wasn't a big fan of going back and forth between the stories but it just didn't grab me. Too many books to read to struggle with one that isn't working for me.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Ah well Donna- we can't like them all. How far did you get?

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Wow so you were onto the Dolce (part two then). Hopefully, your next book will be better.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments So has anyone seen the movie of this one? I might watch it after I finish reading the book (so slowly !) .

Colleen | 1205 comments I didn't realize it was made into a movie until it was nominated last month . I will have to order it off Amazon because I can't find the movie anywhere.
I read this novel a few years ago and felt so sad about she never got to finish it . I wonder where she would have taken the storyline . The amazing thing about this novel is that she was writing it while so much chaos was happening . I think it gives the novel a high level of urgency. I will be interested in seeing how the movie handles it.

Colleen | 1205 comments Question, has anyone watched the movie ? Its 25 on Amazon and I don't know if its worth it .

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments It's only 3 Euro to rent from YouTube and about 12 quid to buy - so cheaper than Amazon. I may rent it if I have time to watch it in full this weekend.

Colleen | 1205 comments I think I'll keep looking but it seems to be unavailable in most places over here . I wonder why ? I hope you get a chance to watch it this weekend.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Must be a uk or European film? So it's harder to get region 1 rights ?

Usually it's us that find it hard to get a movie at a reasonable price.

Colleen | 1205 comments True I think it either British or French. That explains why I didn't know it was made into a movie. :) I think I'll wait and see how you like it and maybe it will pop up somewhere . I think if I find it for s different region it will play on my PC . Will have to make sure on that .

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Is it worth watching Emma?

I have just checked on Wiki and it's a European film (UK,France and Belgium) that was released in UK cinemas but not US cinemas.

If you go to youtube there are a few people directing you to free streamings.

Margo Got a call from the library that my copy has arrived. Unfortunately I've just started Words of Radiance, 48 hours of listening pleasure ahead of me before I can make a start!

message 25: by Margo (new)

Margo when i went to pick up my cd's they were cassette tapes! i don't possess a type player anymore. this was my first time to use the new national borrowing system :(

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Just finished. But I am really tired tonight so will try and comment tomorrow.

Margo - who has a cassette player anymore?

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments They have them on 13 reasons why - All I could think was how could sooo many teenagers get their hands on a player?

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments I eventually posted my review of this book. It's a bit harder than most to review or talk about as it's unfinished.

Personally I prefer part one - A Storm in June - over the second part Dolce.

This is due in part because I am not found of Romance but I think the first part was probably more finished?

The whole thing is crying out for someone to finish off parts 1 and II and write the rest of the book. I believe that one part of the book was supposed to be centered in the concentration camps?

Yep, a real blast from the past ;-)

Bookworm with Kids The other evening, I had just typed out a long comment on this thread on my phone and I must have it an incorrect button because the whole thing was deleted! I was so demoralised that I couldn't face typing it all in again!
Anyway, I wanted to say that I read this book a few years ago when a colleague of mine recommended it. I did enjoy reading it but I was quite sorry that it was unfinished, I would have liked to have seen how it was all tied together at the end. I haven't been able to read as much this month as I would have liked, it has mostly been audiobooks on my commute. I am nearly finished my Genre Challenge read for Fantasy and I hope to try to skim through Suite Française then before starting the next Genre!
