I just started it, and I'm actually enjoying it. I like post apocalyptic books. This almost reminds me of another book that I read so long ago, but it has the same feel to it.
Just finished this book, I enjoyed that it took place in Hawai'i and we get to learn more about their gods and goddesses. My biggest problem is their portration of the Hawai'ian and Filipino people. The author made them look like savages and racist. It wasn't a very attractive picture that the author set-up. I'm not really sure if it was just me since nobody else saw the problem or I'm just being sensitive. Either way it did affect my rating.

The other thing you mentioned, I did think the same thing. (view spoiler)
I just don't think anyone would actually actively seek out outsiders to kill. I think that was just a little extreme. I understand that people will fight for food, technically I would fight anyone for food if I have to feed my family. But with this author it seems that he set the tone that the Islanders were only cornering the tourists.
I definitely would have enjoyed this book a lot more if he tamed down the outsider issue. I really didn't feel that it was pertinent to the story line, especially the way he directed the main story arc.
I enjoyed the fact that it was set in Hawai'i and we got to see a lot more of the culture. Plus, the father and daughter team was a good change.
Sorry Jenny, I know you enjoyed it, and I understand why you enjoyed it. I guess this one is just not for me. I do kinda want to see what happens to the Leilani and her family, So I'm a bit torn.

No worries Blue, I really liked hearing your opinion! I'm sorry those things drug down the book for you.
I agree with you completely on the things you liked, those were the things I liked best too.
