colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments MrsJ's birthday pick. It is book #2 in the series, but we've read Book #1 as a group.

Please mark all spoilers with < spoiler > tags < /spoiler >, or MrsJ will pelt you with old birthday cake.

I tried the audio a couple of years ago and ended up bailing. It wasn't horrible..it just didn't work for me in that format. It was a reread though.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I just didn't like the first book at all.. But that was a long time ago, so maybe I'd like it now? Also, people tend to like this more.. I want to like the series so I'm tempted to try it... But it's so effing long.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Yes, I remember. I also know you're doing a lot of audio now so wanted to warn you. At least check out the sample before you use a credit.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I could never do this on audio. It would be way to complicated for me to focus on while driving and tired :-P

I mostly do re-reads or light reading on audio. Anything too heavy triggers my ADD and I don't pay attention.

I've been told its better written and a little different than book 1. It doesn't continue the same plot line as book 1 (I've been told). Some people say they start here.

I'm about 10 pages in and it's def a different cast and plot thus far.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Dawn, that's why I ended up abandoning the audio I think. Even as a reread, it was too dense for audio.

MrsJ, some of the characters from book 1 do show up, but it's definitely a different storyline.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments And that's the only reason I'm even considering the possibility of contemplating maybe potentially reading this one despite greatly disliking the first.

But then again, it's so effing long!

That's good! Having all new people is a bit overwhelming.

Says the Sanderson fan. ;-)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I like my Sanderson long. I wish it were longer. I never want it to end when I'm reading a Sanderson.

I do not get that same feeling from most books! Especially this.

Michael Timmins | 4 comments To me, the Malazan Book of the Fallen is by far the best series I have ever read. Erikson is a brilliant writer, his descriptions, his metaphors, the dialogue, the CHARACTERS! AHH... All brilliant. Many of of the books handle different story lines, but they all come together at some point, or multiple points. Just brilliant.

I did like book 1. I'm hoping I'll be able to get into #2, too.

Michael | 4 comments So far I'm enjoying this a lot. About half-way through at this point, but it's been delicious so far.

Well, some of the characters are in the first book. Sorry is Apsalar. Fiddler and Kalam are in GotM. So is Crokus.

Ganoes's sisters, Felisin and Tavore, are important in the novel. Felisin is a main character. (I went back to read her part in GotM a while ago, and--knowing what I do now--found it utterly heartrending.) Tavore has taken over Lorn's position as the Empress's Adjunct.

So those are connections. The only real plot connection is that Kalam, Fiddler, and Crokus are returning Apsalar to her fishing village, which does seem farfetched, but a nice gesture nevertheless.

What I am really enjoying about DHG is that the setting of the world is resolving more, both the history and the different races. Mappo and Icarium are two great characters. :-)

Michael | 4 comments Wow. 82% of the way through and it's all weaving together. The sentence-level writing isn't brilliant, but the dialogue is pure gold. There is great humor too. Most of all, though, I am blown away by the plot and the depth of the characters.

Maggie K | 11 comments the scene with all the yellow butterflies.....dang

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Acck. I should try again. I'm studying for a major test so the confusion is killing me.

I need to find an in-depth review of book 1.

Here you go: http://www.tor.com/series/malazan-rer...

Tor.com reread posts are the best. Full of spoilers if you're in the wrong book.

I read through the one for The Way of Kings (Sanderson) before I started the second book, and it was a perfect review. I never felt lost.

Michael | 4 comments Just finished. Outstanding how that tapestry weaves together. :-)
