Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments What's everyone reading for this square? I was planning THE BOOK OF NEGROES, but just reading that it's been challenged so I may move it to the banned book square. I'm now thinking SHOELESS JOE, the book on which the movie Field of Dreams is based.

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 465 comments I was thinking of Alias Grace or The Luminaries, but they are both longish books, so waiting until I am on summer vacation.

Shoeless Joe was a good read.

Diane (Tvor) | 357 comments I read Eleanor Catton's first book, The Rehearsal. The movie debuted at TIFF last fall.

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments I enjoyed THE LUMINARIES, but it is quite long.

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments Is THE REHEARSAL a YA book?

message 6: by Susan (new)

Susan | 851 comments I would say The Rehearsal is not YA.

I'm probably going to read Joshua Then and Now (unless I use it for the Classic square) or Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief for this square.

Megan I'm thinking of reading barney's version. The republic of love by carol shields was made into an indie movie.

Mj I'm planning Random Passage by Bernice Morgan. It was made into a movie/mini-series in 2002. Am really looking forward to reading the book as it's been on to read list for quite some time. It's too bad ༺ Allison ༻ that you can't do double duty with your favourite book.

I also considered Unless by Carol Shields which was made into a movie in 2016. If you like Margaret Laurence, her book A Jest of God was made into the 1968 movie Rachel Rachel directed by Paul Newman starring Joanne Woodward.

Allison | 2121 comments I used A Long Way Home for this square. It isn't Canadian, but it was a great read. Was made into the movie "Lion" with Nicole Kidman.

Diane (Tvor) | 357 comments The structure of The Rehearsal is a bit different, seems to be two different timelines but each chapter is labeled. I wouldn't call it YA, not your typical one, anyway.

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments So many great ideas here. I'm intrigued by THE REHEARSAL for sure.

Mary Anne | 313 comments I read The Lesser Blessed for the book to movie square. It is a very poetic rendition of the life of young people trying to live with the undercurrent of violence, and existential uncertainty of growing up Native and male.

Mj @ Mary Anne - looks interesting. Thanks for sharing. Though I lean more towards female authors when given the opportunity, Richard Van Camp is an author who's been on my possibility list for some time based on his body of work. Surprisingly my library only has the dvd/movie and not the book on hand, although I'm sure I could get it through Interlibrary Loans when I get through my current pile of books on hand.

Has anyone read The Blondes? It will be made into a movie: http://www.cbc.ca/books/2017/06/adapt...

message 15: by Susan (new)

Susan | 851 comments I read it and was disappointed. I don't remember much about why I didn't like it but I gave it 2 stars.
