The beautiful weather makes me want to go outside...and read a book. What are you reading this month on your lounge chair in the garden?

Susan (yetanothersusan) | 203 comments A little heavy for the weather, but I am reading The Road to Jonestown about Jim Jones and Peoples Temple. It is fascinating reading!

Susan (yetanothersusan) | 203 comments It looks like many of you read multiple books at the same time. How do you do that? How do you decide which of the books to read at any particular time? I have a friend who won't read from her Nook before bedtime so she generally has 2 going at one time. I have decided to read "real" books on weekends and ebooks during the week so I don't have to carry around a bunch of books on the train. But I will still finish whatever I am on before moving on to the next, regardless of the day.

I usually just have two books going at a time: an audiobook and a physical/e-book, since I use them at different times.
Currently, I have an e-book going AND physical which is very different for me. But, I've been using the physical one for right before bed when I don't have as much time to read (since it is a re-read) and it is quite heavy. Therefore, I keep my e-reader on me so I can read when I'm out and about.

I usually have one audio book going and one book that I carry around with me. Occasionally, I have a book I read at work too. Usually all three books are very different so it is easy to keep them straight. This is a relatively new thing for me. I used to be a one book at a time gal, but somewhere along the line things changed. I think it was probably when I joined 3 book groups and suddenly had reading deadlines!

I read several books at a time in a glorious mess of reading. I have an audio book for the car, an ebook for my phone and walking, two books to glance through and prepare to read and one that I'm actually reading at home. I have a feeling that if I were a one book reader I'd never do anything else because I'd be racing through it, afraid I wouldn't get to the next one before it's time to turn it in.

message 9: by Susan (new)

Susan (yetanothersusan) | 203 comments But it still takes the same amount of time to read the books. So if it takes you 3 days per book (average and for example) and you are reading 3 books, it will take you 9 days whether you read them one at a time or alternate between them. Right? I think I would forget what was going on and it would take longer to re-acclimate to each book as I bounced back and forth.
Though I do understand using multiple formats.

I usually have two books going at a time. A paperback or e-book for my bus book because there not as heavy. I have my giant hardbacks for home sitting on my bedside table. I have to stop myself from reading them before bed on week days though or I read just a little bit more and it's 12:30am and I have to get up at 6:30 for work. Keeping them straight isn't usually a problem even if they don't end up being different genres. I do occasionally have finished off my bus book when I get to work or home if I only have a chapter or two to finish.

I occasionally think I should get some lawn chairs for my patio this year. Then I remember I hate spring because I'm allergic to everything that blooms and try to avoid outdoors. If I end up outside next weekend I'll be reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman but, I might save it until after I see the mini-series so, I don't get disappointed by what they left out. I'm also starting 12 Angry Librarians by Miranda James.

❤Marie Gentilcore (rachelx) | 39 comments This month I read Night Road by Kristin Hannah. It was so good! Now I'm reading Orange is the New Black by Piper Herman. And I need to get to the library to pick up The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. And if I'm lucky I will also get Lincoln on the Bardo by George Saunders. I'm next in line on Overdrive.

Just finished Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. Great read. Don't agree with all of his beliefs but he comes from a place not unknown to me and he paints it beautifully.

Oh boy... My plate is full of books for this month.

I'm slowly making my way through The Leaving by Tara Altebrando for the Alt Library book club. I'm currently listening to Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool as a recommendation from a patron. Gotta love those eAudiobooks on OverDrive!!

I've also been re-reading the Magic Tree House series that I loved as a kid, but couldn't quite remember where I left off. The next one in line for that is Revolutionary War on Wednesday.

I really enjoyed The Leaving. I loved the way the text was presented for how they thinking. That will be a fun book to talk about!

Susan (yetanothersusan) | 203 comments The Leaving sounds intriguing and a lot better than the reviews it seems to be getting. I am not in the Alt Library book club but would love to hear what you all think of it before I decide whether or not to read it.

This has been a rough reading week for me. I quit two different books after starting--one was good, but too dark ( Salt to the Sea ) and one was making me too angry and unhappy with all the misery suffered by the character ( Wages of Sin). Both might have been good books, (and indeed, both were recommended to me highly) but I was reading them at the wrong time. After those disappointments I read a mediocre book that I finished mostly because I actually wanted to finish a book. So this morning, looking for a sure fire hit I pulled The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi out of my pile of library books. I started it at lunch and am already a very happy reader.

Hi Susan,
Our Alt Library book club is meeting next Wednesday (4/19) to discuss the book. And I'll be sure to post some reactions on our Meetup page (www.meetup.com/altlibrary), in case you wanted to see what we thought about it :)

Stephanie Stefun I just finished NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity, after starting it in March. It is a non-fiction book, which was a bit dry for me (not my genre of choice) but still informative, especially with my husband being un-diagnosed on the spectrum.

My next book, also on the topic of Autism, is The Golden Hat: Talking Back to Autism. Not far into this one, but it seems to be an easier read. I found this on the shelf randomly in the library and it peeked my interest.

Also on the list is Wonderstruck and other books by Brian Selznick that I've checked out from the library.

Per the earlier topic of how many books are read, I am one of those that prefer to hold a book in my hand, so I will read until the book is done. However, the rare times I have read an e-book, I treated it as a book and didn't swap between reads. For my head, I can't keep track of multiple books at once.

Thanks! I tried to see if I could get a library copy to read and come to the meeting but wasn't able to. How did everyone like the book?

I am reading a few different books but currently listening to All our Wrong Todays. Not sure how I ended up in a Sci-Fi mode these past couple months but I'm really enjoying it. This book involves time travel and the mistakes made that brings our main character back to the current time but in a different reality. Relationships start, end, resolve and then are faced with even more issues to work through as everyone is trying to find their place in one of these worlds. I highly recommend it!
