Time to take nominations for the May-June 2017 group read.

Only one nomination per person. Please don't nominate books that are in the middle of a series, or are not easily available; especially recent releases.

Choose your books from my Goodreads bookshelf here: sai-king-recommends bookshelf .

Nominations will be accepted until 4/12/17. Then I will set up a poll for voting.

Callie, we already did The Passage as a group read. Sorry! It's excellent, tho. The whole trilogy is awesome!

Just letting everyone know, this one is a long book. 628 pages for the edition listed. I never let big books daunt me, but I know others do.

I think I'll nominate the first book in a series I've been interested in for a while: Rules of Prey. John Sandford is a SK recommended author. SK said: "Sandford writes great, unapologetic guy fiction...but you guy-ettes will have a good time too."

Travis (travistousant) | 137 comments Holy smokes I haven't been around in ages and here I am to second The Nix. Heard so many good things in that one

Good to see you, Travis! You ready to take it on, eh? Well, I'm always game!

message 12: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 137 comments Well one thing with this group is there are 2 months. If a chunkster seems daunting one could read 10 pages a day and suddenly it's manageable . Not how I do it usually but certainly it's an option.

Hi Horace:

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is another large book, but we might be game to tackle it. David Copperfield is not a SK recommendation. Plus, we are only allowed one nomination. We can accept the Edgar Sawtelle book for your nomination.

Larissa, I really loved The Fireman. Like father, like son.

Hi Horace:

Thanks for joining in, by the way!

I've got a couple Charles Dickens books on my list that SK recommended, specifically. However, I haven't found any source where SK recommended Charles Dickens, overall. I suspect he would probably recommend him, but I've found no source for it. If you have a quote from SK about Charles Dickens as a recommended author, please let me know.

Larissa | 270 comments Y'all, I loved The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I'm a sucker for a young narrator and dogs and allusions to Hamlet!

message 19: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 270 comments Yes, Horace. Boy's Life was phenomenal!

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Quoting an author in a fiction novel is not generally considered a source. I've read SK's non-fiction books several times and took thorough notes, plus kept close watch for recommendations over the years. In any case, I'll certainly take your point under consideration. Thanks, Horace.

McCammon, for the most, has only written excellent books. Swan Song is my favorite of his. As close to The Stand I've ever found.

Larissa, good to hear Sawtelle is an excellent read. I picked it up as a used book a couple years ago but have never gotten around to it.

Except sometimes the mention of a book is because it was sooo awful! lol!

Well he did lend a blurb to the book right on the front cover. That sounds like a recommendation to me. :)

Yep! Good catch! I've added it to the bookshelf. It doesn't look like it got many readers/reviewers. Believe it or not, I found in our interloan library system. Also, there are several low-priced used copies available on Amazon.

The Bottoms, by Lansdale certainly sounds like a great read, but unfortunately has not been recommended by King, Coby. I even did a google search just to be sure. Sorry!

We won't be accepting any more nominations for the next group read. I will take the ones we have and randomly choose 4 or 5 and put them in a poll for voting.

message 37: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 801 comments Did you intend to put The Nix on the poll twice, or was there to have been a fourth book?

Almeta pointed the problem out to me, too, Janice. Thanks for being our secret moderator! I just fixed the poll. Because I can only send out one broadcast message to all members per day, I will have to wait until tomorrow to inform folks of the error, and that The Story of Edgar Sawtelle has been added to the list. Those folks who have already voted will be told they can change their votes if they want to.
