Simon Rumney | 8 comments In order to write a book about racism I placed myself in the mind of a Native American woman who is forced to make sense of Confederate States during The Civil War. It hurt me to do so.

To give you an idea of the story it is about a native American woman who saves the life of a wounded Confederate Officer after the Battle of Shiloh. As a high born southerner Robert must deal with his marrow deep racism while falling in love with an 'Indian'. After he takes Julii back to his home in Atlanta she is forced to deal with the irrational hatred of skin color. As passion and hatred shapes their journey, Julii is drawn into a conflict which leads to her sabotaging the southern States war effort.

As a white English person I have never been judged for my color. Placing myself in the mind of someone who suffers so illogical has opened my eyes.

That is true. Placing yourself in another race's shoes is a good way to see how ugly racism really is and I think it's a great inspiration for your book to see the ugly side of racism.

It is something everyone should do at least once in their life.
