Tamra | 6 comments Desperately seeking a children's picture book from the late 80s or early 90s. It was about a female sparrow who meets a toad wearing a bottle cap on his head. The toad states that he is a king and says that he will show her the treasures of his kingdom if she follows him underground. In the end the top is ripped off the toad's "palace" and his treasures are nothing but junk. The sparrow teaches the toad how to read in the wreckage. It had a black cover with the pictures of the sparrow and the toad (with his bottlecap) the title and frame around the pictures was blue or purple. The illustrations were very detailed, comparable to Graeme Base, but I've looked, and it wasn't him. Nor was it Barbara Helen Burger. I would love to have this classic from my childhood in my collection if I can find it. Please help!

Cinda (CinderRella) I did quite a bit of searching. I wish I had improved insight into the storyline so I could use better search phrases to find this little hidden gem.

I know! It's driving me nuts! I remember the last sentences
"R is for ridiculous!" said the toad.
"R is for reading." (the sparrow)
"R is for reading." (the toad)

I also remember the items the toad showed the sparrow, there were three: jewels (bottlecaps and bits of glass) statues of the ancestors (smooth pebbles) and the library of toad wisdom (a page from a phone book).
The toad said ridiculous a lot.

Rosemarie Thanks for the info. I could see some of the illustrations in my mind, but the words were long gone.
