Inheritance
question
I hated the ending, what did you think?

None of them end up with the one they love Eragon goes across the sea while Arya stays because she has to be queen (well wants to be), Nasaudia has to rule the kingdom, and Murtagh left to the north. Why would you end the last book of a series sad???

I don't have a high opinion of these books as it is. The thing is:
Lord of the Rings ended like this: with change.
As the natural plagiarist he is, Paolini of course had to have this ending as well. The elves sail across the silver sea, back to where they came from. Every single main character in Lord of the Rings goes through change. Even Gimli, who befriends Legolas and in the end sails across the sea with him.
Therefore all the characters in Inheritance have to go through some change. Even if some don't make much sense. Nasuada on the throne? Where are the true heirs to the throne?
Then there's Arya not really wanting to be queen in the first place and then giving in to the nagging of the other elves. This doesn't work if she's supposed to be also a rider. In fact, she's a second Galbatorix: Immortal, all-powerful with a dragon to undermine her rule.
Bad, bad choice. You never know at which point an immortal leaves their 'humanity' behind.
So yeah, the ending sucked. Not only because it sucked in a general way but also because it's a carbon-copy of the Lord of the Rings ending, only that it was pulled off badly.
Probably not the answer you were looking for. I'll go about my business now.

I am a huge epic fantasy fan The sword of Truth novels being my favorite .....The eragon story was okay but I was seriously disappointed then Eragon let Nasuada be such a rude B*tch to him and then the ending being the worse. To me series is on my top ten it being 7. One being the best. The author is planning on writing a back story for one of the protagonists ...I'm not going to read it....
I wanted to read about the new dragon riders. I want to know if there is a dragon rider Urgal. And Eragon going away was no okay with me. At all. Just don't ask me to explain because I don't know why.
OH MY GOSH I JUST FOUND THIS. I AM FANGIRLING. http://inheritance.wikia.com/wiki/Book_5

I loved the ending. It felt realistic after a long war. Eragon needed to train, Arya needed to lead her people after they lost their queen and i would assume other elves, murtaugh had to leave inorder to heal himself and let the people heal before they could forgive the things he did and Nasuada had to do what she needed to do. And the getting together can come later like arya said if it was meant. Let the world heal, and let make sure we protect ourselves from any other threats. It was one of the better ending i have read in fanatasy novel in a long time. Paolini just needed a editor the last two books had chapters that should have been left out imo
As you all are aware of, there are a lot of unanswered questions. Paolini said that he is going to write a fifth book in which they will be answered.
I may be one of the few who didn't feel disappointed by the ending. It avoided getting a too happy ending
Over all I loved the end. My only problem with it, is Arya being rider and queen. She comments that Eragon has sworn allegiance to Nassuada and to Orik. Swearing allegiance and to help is so not on the same level as being ruler. Is ok being queen but not Eragon being king, kinda seems like a double standard.
My other major issue is with Arya staying hidden from Eragon and then later staying, to start the training. It's almost like she (and in part the elves) are slapping Eragon in the face and saying he isn't Head Rider, and that they (Arya and the elves) know all of the secrets of being a dragon and rider.
Lastly, it kinda irritates me how Nassuada treats Eragon in the end. I get that he has sworn himself to her, but she treats him as a a subject and not as an equal. She needs to remember that he could have taken the crown and her hope to keep him in balance of all 3 races. Some of the stuff yes he needed to do a rider, but still.

The ending is truly terrible because loose ends are not tied, there is no satisfying climax that finalizes the adventures of everyone (things are still going on after the ending and we don't get to know what happens), relationships we were looking forward to were ground into the dust, and so many plot elements brought up in those four huge books were left standing and rendered useless.
Paolini sort of betrayed my trust as a reader because I personally expect my authors to tie up a story so that the ending is somewhat satisfying. What he did was attempt to let the story live on with a horrible (view spoiler) ending. I hated how so much material needed explaining and either none of it was or none of it looped back to previous books or none of it was explained satisfactorily.
Oh, and let's not forget that the climax is more of an anticlimax with falling action that is even worse.

Well, I guess we will see when this book comes out. I wonder if he has read all the comments about the ending of Inheritance.

it actually didn't disappoint me that much that eragon left the country because it was clear that everything that angela predicted with those Dragon bones would come true.. so that wasn't that surprising, because she already said that he would go away. i also was very happy with the thingy that now everybody would be allowed to be a dragon rider and the fourth egg was that dragon girl for arya.. i'm actually quite happy with the ending, i wouldn't stand the pain of a really sad ending like if murtagh or arya died. it was kind of a relistic ending that not everything would be good and everybody would live happily ever after.. so yeah, i'm happy
I hated the ending more than the ending of any book I have ever read in my life (and I have read a lot). I was seriously upset and I couldn't believe he left. I mean, until Eragon announced he was leaving, it was fantastic, and Paolini should have left it at that! But, NOOOO, he had to go and mess everything up.
I love the ending mostly because i didnt expect it ! And i really treasure when something in a book surprise me. I almost cried in the end, was sad for at least a week. Someone in the above comments stated that it didnt made sense. Well Paolini stated in the end that he will return someday to continue the story , but probably about different characters :) I think that it all makes sense about the ending, it is pretty much explained by the author.
I didn't like how the ending just left me hanging. I want to know who Eragon ends up with or if he ever ends up with anyone. And I want to know what happens with Murtagh.
I feel like there should have been at least one happy ending :/ but this is still one of my favourite series EVER!
I went to a book signing for the last book, and someone asked him if he was planning to write another series. He said that he didn't know if he'd write a new series immediately, but that one day he definitely would, and that's why he ended it like that. I'm just patiently waiting!
i agree, i hate the ending. because i want know more Galbatorix information. he die so fast and very simple!!
I hated the ending. I mean they were basically in love with each other and then when he is going off to save the world and save the dragons and whatnot, she leaves him. I mean how can you do that? What happens afterwards?!
For me I just felt that the whole final book was nothing special. Everything that happened we could've guessed from the hints and prophecies that he gave previously. It wasn't just the ending that was disappointing but the whole book itself
Well, apparently Paolini wants to write another series based on the original in order to continue some of the stories, like Murtagh, who, in my opinion, couldn't be with Nasuanda anyway, because he is immortal and she isn't. Now, Eragon had to leave according to his profecy, but there was no reason why Arya couldn't join him. So I think there will be a book about Arya, if not Eragon.
My problem with the ending of the series is that it ended too fast and too perfect. Like every evil in the world was banished along with Galbatorix.
Arya is both a ruler and a rider too. Where is the elves conception that no rider should be a king because it will be too powerful? I wold like to see Arya the rider turning against her own people in the next war between the elves and any other race in Aglaesia.
Firnen appeared like there was a score to even between the humans and the elves.
Eragon, together with Saphyra, wanting to give a future to the new generation of dragons, walk away on the hard earned peace and search for another peaceful place to raise the little ones. Is it just me thinking that they fought for nothing?
And on top of all, I still don't know why every big guy in the enemy army was so afraid of Angela the witch.

Honestly the ending was so sad and disappointing. I don't really care the "reasons" behind it. All it made me do what forget about this series - when in reality Eragon was one of my favorite books. I'm pretty sure Christopher just didn't want to be cliche - so in fact he tried so hard to not have a "happy ending" that it was stupid.
I did not like the ending either!!! I already had a complaint that he made the trilogy into four books. Then he ended where Eragon ends up alone and with nothing!! That sucked!!
