MsB | 1134 comments Hi all, Recently my Mom wasn't feeling well and trapped in the house. So I sent her two paper books that I had listened to. "The Nightingale" and "From Sand and Ash". She typically reads Mary Higgins Clark. Anyway, she loved both books I sent her. I sent her "From Sand and Ash" because I remember when growing up she loved the Thornbirds , we are Italian American and she has lots of close Jewish friends. Many who lost loved ones in the Holocaust. I just remembered I also sent her "Brighton" by Michael Harvey. Which she also liked. Maybe because we are from Brighton. Anyway, I would love to send her some more books to read. And would also love to get her some sort of subscription to books for Mothers Day. I wish she would agree to use a kindle but she likes paper.
One of the difficulties I am having is that since I listen to books I sometimes wonder if the written book is as good as the audio. I also like to send her books that are highly rated and that I have listened to or plan to. The other difficulty I am having is that I've noticed that a lot of the books that are currently highly rated or that I plan to listen to are all based in the Second World War and I question if what I'm sending her is too repetitive. I would love your opinion of both books to send her and possibly a subscription service where she can choose best sellers she may be interested in. Thanks in advance for all of your help :)

Here are the ones I'm thinking of.

These are the books I've listened to
Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah
The Witness by Nora Roberts
The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman
We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter

These are some of the books I'm considering listing to and sending to her.
Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark T. Sullivan
The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve (this is based on a fire that happened in Maine that she may remember)
The Secret Wife by Gill Paul
The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See

FYI, I loved Lilac Girls and I read it versus listened.

I also read The Witness (always wished I'd listened to it) and really liked it.

I took a look at my contemporary fiction shelf (all books I read) and have a few recommendations:

Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf
What Was Mine by Helen Klein Ross
The Lemon Orchard by Luanne Rice

I'd also recommend Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. Even though I listened to this story, I'm confident the printed version is equally compelling.

All of these books are thought provoking and I'd have no issue with my grandmother reading any of them.

Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf What Was Mine by Helen Klein Ross Me Before You (Me Before You, #1) by Jojo Moyes The Lemon Orchard by Luanne Rice

MsB | 1134 comments Jonetta thanks again. I will check those books out. I had suggested Me Before You to my Mom. I also read and enjoyed that book. But she had no interest :: shrug::

Lee | 484 comments I have enjoyed several of Elizabeth Camden's books. Does your mom read ebooks? Against the Tide by Elizabeth Camden is free today.

Also recommend Susanna Kearsley's books, especially the audio versions, including The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley and The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley .
