The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
I find it helpful to have the weeks begin on a Saturday or Sunday. If we move it all forward exactly two weeks, that would make it start this Thursday:
May 18-19 45 pages Prologue, Chs 1-6 (p. 48)
May 20-26 154 Chs 7-31 (-p. 204)
May 27-June 2 154 Chs 32-53 (-p. 355)
June 3-9 154 Chs 54-71 (-p. 505)
June 10-16 154 Chs 72-Epilogue (-p.662)
How does that look to everyone?

I'll give it my best shot!
I might lag a bit behind for the first week as I finish some books but I'll catch up :)

I like my week to start with Monday as I don't usually get much reading done on weekends. Thank goodness for work commute; I get at least 2 hours' reading time (and usually, in peace) ;D
I'll update the top schedule to start this Thurs.

And starting Monday is fine with me, too. When you update the top dates, why don't you let the first line be May 18-21, and slide all the other dates by a couple days, so we'd end on June 18? That would seem to work better with Dee's schedule, also.

I've listened to the first 2 chapters so far - I find the voice of the main character interesting - its definitely intrigued me
Even though it happened accidentally, it turns out the end of Ch 6 was a good point to break after our first few days. It seems like Kvothe might be going to start telling his story after this.
Up until that point, I found the beginning a bit frustrating. There was too much background we don't know yet. For example, who is Bast? He's a student of Kote, but there's an implication of more, too.
I also didn't quite know what to make of the prologue.

I read it many years ago and have been meaning to do a re-read in audio but Nick P.'s voice is not as lyrical as I imagined so I haven't been able to. Maybe I should just push those first few chapters until I get used to his interpretation...

Sorry, I've been a bit absent because I've no internet at home or rather we've run out of data so I've not been able to go online unless I want to sit there & patiently wait 5-10 mins for a web page to open, grrr... Should be restored tomorrow, I think.
I also have yet to start (as I previously mentioned I don't usually get much reading done on weekends but I will start today!)

That first 6 chapters were such a quick read & am loving it, atm...
I LOL'd about the 'good note' -still smiling about it hahaha

Oh, yes. That was great. I wonder whether we'll learn more about the relationship between Kote and Bast, or whether the rest of the book is all about Kote/Kvothe's life leading up to this point.

There's a quote I really love in the next section. It starts on p. 182 in my copy, very near the end of Ch. 26. I won't post it here until you've both gotten there, though it doesn't really give anything away.
How is everyone doing? I've been making myself slow down so I don't get ahead. But I'm going to start chapter 32 tonight. The book is actually due at the library tomorrow, so after tonight, I'll have to wait until I get a chance to check it out again.
Oh no, you couldn't renew? I am up to date, ch 31. Just been soo busy with the writers festival on this week ;)

It was kind of alluded to but his parents were killed because of one of his fathers songs?
I think so... the song that he's working on anyway on that particular story which no one likes to say the name of...?

Yes, definitely. By the people (beings?) the song was about. The Chandrian. We learn more about them when he meets Skarpi and listens to his story.
And gut-wrenching in some places, yes. But laugh-out-loud funny in others. And I don't laugh out loud easily. I'm loving it.

I couldn't renew it, but I was first on the hold list, just as a precaution. So had to turn it in and then can get it again almost right away. I finished chapters 32-53 Saturday night, and will be able to check it out again before the weekend. So nothing lost. I do have to finish it before its 3 weeks are up this time, though, because now there are 2 other people waiting for it, and they'd be ahead of me.
What is writer's festival? Is it for writers to get together, or for readers to meet writers?

oh, I'm glad you're loving it, Susan! I am currently trying to finish off one of the seasonal challenges (40% left of the last book) then I'll get back on to tNotW.
Writer's Festival is for both, really... I guess mostly for readers to meet writers but usually there are writers in the audience too. It's more like sharing of ideas, discussion of ideas (there are panels of authors & discussion usually centred on the festival's theme which this year is Refuge). I saw Paul Beatty & Roxanne Gay - even got to say hello to them since I was a volunteer and had to pick them up from the Writer's green room (backstage so to speak) to the venue (separate buildings in the same precinct). I also saw to many Australian YA authors as I was rostered on for the YAday including Garth Nix & Amie Kauffman! Sarah Crossnan & Jennifer Niven were in attendance this year... fangirling day! lol
They have podcasts, if you're curious about what they speak about... if you have an iphone/ipod, that is, as they're only on itunes! (I don't have any Apple products!) swf podcasts on itunes

Let me guess this one... is it that quote about truth in story?

There was a bit I liked last night as well though I can't quite remember which chapters but it's not a spoiler anyway. Just when Kvothe said that in stories, there are usually young man who worked hard and then achieved glory etc but usually we aren't told really the nitty gritty of life including all the follies they may have committed.
And uh, Susan, how do you pronounce 'Kvothe' in your head? Dee, you could probably tell us how they say it on the audiobook! I'm vacillating between 2 ways of saying it lol

At one point in the book, they say it's a lot llike "quoth" or "quoth-ay." I forget which. I've been sort of thinking "Quoth."

I'd love to continue. I'll be away a lot mid-June to mid-July, so I'll have to see whether I can get the ebook (There are 7 people ahead of me now), or check it out when I get to my kids' place. I can definitely get the audiobook in time, but I'm a much slower listener than Dee is, since I don't have a commute.

Yep. Exactly. I guess it's time to post it.
"Is it true? The story." ...
"All stories are true," Skarpi said. "But this one really happened, if that's what you mean." ...
"More or less. You have to be a bit of a liar to tell a story the right way. Too much truth confuses the facts. Too much honesty makes you sound insincere."
(pp. 182-183 in my copy)

Btw I read some more tonight as I really couldn't start any book til tomorrow ;p so I'm about ch. 62, I think... but I will stop now and try to hang on til Monday to finish up next week's goal :)
Isn't it amazing that we thought it was a big book but we're enjoying it so much, it's actually feeling too small?! I've got less than 300 pages left to go and feeling sad that it'll be over sooner than later already!

I so wanted to join y'all in reading this book that I bought it for my Kindle. However, life has interfered with much of my reading lately...so I opted out. Now I wish I had joined you. It seems this is a very good BIG book!

Bea, it is so good! And it really doesn't seem as big when you're reading it as it does when you're looking at it. Once, I did the entire 150 pages we'd set as our plan for the week in a single night. Without staying up all that late, either. It just goes ... smoothly, I guess is the word for it.
We're only two weeks in so far. I think you should jump in right now and try it. At least one evening's worth of reading, to see if you want to join us. We really haven't given any spoilers on the thread so far that would interfere with your doing that. And, at the very least, you'd be ready to do the second book with us.

Guys, if you're ready to go on, please do... I'll wait til after the weekend (since I'm already halfway through the 3rd week read anyway) - ch. 62 is where I'm up to :)
